The producer
Mas de Libian stands at the end of the Ardèche gorge on the Rhône’s western side, where south-southwest-facing vines ripen Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The Thibon family has held Libian since 1670, though wine became the farm’s main work when Jean-Pierre Thibon built a cellar in 1970. Hélène and Catherine Thibon now run the 25-hectare vineyard estate with Alain, alongside eight hectares devoted to cereals, hay, olives and other farm uses.
Biodynamically certified since 2005, the domaine hand harvests, hoes in spring and ploughs part of its vines with horses. Natural-yeast fermentation in unlined concrete and ageing in old foudres or older demi-muids keep fruit and tannin in view. Khayyâm, a Grenache-led Côtes-du-Rhône red, brings dark cherry, herbs, cocoa and spice over a full, fleshy palate, with savoury grip and a long velvety finish.

The Producer
Mas de Libian is a 25-hectare family domaine in Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche. The Thibons bought Libian in 1670, but wine became the farm’s main activity only when Jean-Pierre Thibon built a cellar in 1970. Hélène and Alain joined in 1995, Catherine in 2006; their wines now carry southern Rhône grapes from a holding that also keeps eight hectares for cereals, hay, olives and other living farm uses.
Place
Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche sits at the end of the Ardèche gorge, on the western side of the Rhône. The vines face south-southwest, a position that ripens Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre fully and helps explain the warm fruit in the reds. Mas de Libian works at both Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages level: the labels lead back to parcels whose ground shifts from clay and limestone to red clay and rounded river stones.
Soil And Site
Clay and limestone dominate the Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards, while the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages parcels include red clay and rounded river stones. Those materials sit beneath south-southwest-facing vines, so ripe berry fruit arrives with a firmer, savoury edge instead of only sweetness. In Khayyâm, the Grenache fruit is joined by Mourvèdre and Syrah, a blend that brings darker fruit, spice and tannin grip to the warmer setting.
Story
Libian began as a Thibon hunting lodge and manor house before the family settled there as farmers. Jean-Pierre Thibon’s 1970 cellar changed the farm’s direction: wine moved from one activity among many to its main work. The cellar was enlarged in 1982, and the next generation later expanded the working team. That long farm history remains visible in the wine estate’s mixed land use, where vineyards occupy 25 hectares and food-growing or biodiversity-related ground occupies another eight.
Vineyards And Cellar
Mas de Libian received biodynamic certification in 2005. The team hand harvests, hoes soils by hand in spring and ploughs part of the vines with horses, choices that keep the work close to individual rows rather than treating the vineyard as a single machine-managed block. In the cellar, natural yeasts ferment the wines in unlined concrete vats; some cuvées then age in old foudres or older demi-muids. Little sulphur is used, sometimes none during vinification, and the wines are neither fined nor filtered, leaving fruit, texture and tannin to carry the finish.
Wines
The domaine makes red, white and rosé wines, but Khayyâm is the bottle documented most fully. It is a Côtes-du-Rhône red built around Grenache. For 2023, the producer records 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah. Grenache supplies the wine’s warm red and black fruit; Mourvèdre adds savoury depth and structure, while Syrah brings darker fruit and spice.
Khayyâm sits on the richer, warmer end of Mas de Libian’s range. Its 2023 form was described by the estate as its most oriental and spicy wine, with the frame to age for up to ten years. The 2024 wine spent nine months in élevage involving foudres, bringing oak maturation without turning the profile into an overtly woody red. The result is a substantial, fleshy Rhône blend whose body and grip suit a proper meal as readily as a decanter.
In The Glass
Khayyâm opens with dusty black cherry, sour cherry, strawberry, cassis, violet, herbs, cocoa and spice. On the palate, the Grenache-led blend is full-bodied and creamy or fleshy rather than lean; Syrah and Mourvèdre keep the fruit dark, savoury and lightly gripped by silky tannins. Concrete fermentation and old large-format oak leave the fruit in view, while the finish runs long and velvety, with spice and a stony mineral note lingering after the berry fruit.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with Khayyâm. The 2023 bottling is 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah: a clear expression of the grapes Mas de Libian grows in its warm Ardèche setting. Expect dark cherry, herbs, cocoa and spice over a full, creamy palate, then tannin and savoury fruit through the finish. Its fermentation in concrete and nine-month élevage involving foudres make it a useful first bottle because they show the estate’s fruit-forward southern Rhône style without heavy oak. Give it time in a decanter if it seems closed.
Anecdote
In 2006, the year Catherine Thibon joined the family domaine, she bought Nestor, a workhorse from Franche-Comté. A few months later she began ploughing five hectares of Mas de Libian’s vines with him, bringing horse work into the estate’s vineyard routine alongside hand harvesting and spring hoeing. Nestor continued in the rows for the following years. In 2016, Catherine and Nestor were joined by Bambi, a second horse, and the pair became part of the working rhythm among the vines at Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche.
Final Word
Mas de Libian joins a long-held family farm to a concrete southern Rhône wine style: sun-facing clay and limestone vineyards, Grenache-led blends, hand work in the rows and concrete-and-foudre cellar handling. Khayyâm is the direct place to taste that combination in dark fruit, spice, body and savoury grip.
