Evidence-limited registry profile
In 1971, in the Chianti Classico zone, Antinori made a Sangiovese and broke three things at once. They put it into barriques — 225-litre French oak, not the large Slavonian casks that Sangiovese had always gone into. They blended in Cabernet, which sat entirely outside the Chianti blend formula. And they left out white grapes, which the rules permitted and which producers had long included. None of those decisions was required. The zone had not seen a Sangiovese handled this way, and the wine that came out had a different weight, a different tannin frame, and a different colour from what the same hills had previously produced under a Chianti label. They named it Tignanello, and every vintage since 1971 has carried the same three departures.
