The producer
Luis Seabra Vinhos works with leased vineyards across the Douro, Vinho Verde and Dão, favoring old, often difficult sites and organizing wines around soil types such as Granito and Xisto. Luis Seabra's background includes soil research in Vinho Verde, enology teaching and Douro winemaking. His white wines ferment spontaneously with little or no temperature control, and he never uses new oak. Xisto Ilimitado Branco brings lemon, green apple, Bosc pear and slate mineral notes.

The Producer
Old, often extremely challenging vineyards are where Luis Seabra looks for wines of character. Before establishing his own label, he worked as a soil researcher in Vinho Verde, an enology instructor and a winemaker in the Douro. He works with leased vineyards, while Natalia, also a winemaker, plays an essential role in the operation.
Place
The vineyard work spans three regions, the Douro, Vinho Verde and Dão. Seabra lives upriver from Porto in rural Douro, while Vinho Verde also belongs to his earlier soil research. The range narrows that regional spread to soil categories instead of conventional single vineyard names.
Soil And Site
Xisto is schist, while Granito is another soil name used in the range. Seabra favors old, often extremely challenging vineyards when seeking wines of character. He farms organically without chemical treatments 95 percent of the time. In wine terms, a soil category names the ground under the vines, while a single vineyard names one site. Seabra uses the first system for this range.
Story
Seabra set out independently in 2012, and Luis Seabra Vinhos launched in 2013. He pursues low intervention, balanced wines with lower extraction, a complex and lively character, and the ability to age.
Vineyards And Cellar
White wines ferment spontaneously, meaning native yeasts start the process, with little or no temperature control. Some fermentations can take three or four months to complete. New oak can add fresh wood aroma and tannin, but Seabra never uses it. Most wines receive only light fining and filtration before bottling, steps that remove suspended material and clarify the wine.
Wines
The range is organized around soil types such as Granito and Xisto. Xisto Ilimitado Branco is a white Douro still wine within the Xisto part of that range. The style is low intervention and balanced, with lower extraction and the ability to age.
In The Glass
Xisto Ilimitado Branco brings lemon, green apple and Bosc pear, with floral tones and slate minerals. The palate is juicy and driven by mineral notes. In the 2023 vintage, pear blossom, gooseberry, green fig and lemon ran across a stony palate, with grapefruit pith tightening the middle and a long saline finish.
A Bottle To Understand It
Put Xisto Ilimitado Branco first. It is a white Douro wine with Xisto in its name, and its élevage lasts one year on the lees, 90 percent in used barrels and 10 percent in stainless steel, with no bâtonnage. Lees contact can add texture, while bâtonnage is the stirring of lees. The bottle combines a named soil category with a clearly defined white wine élevage.
Anecdote
In 2004, while working at Niepoort, Luis Seabra launched a still wine program. The move challenged the Douro's fortified wine convention. His career included soil research in Vinho Verde, enology teaching and still wine production. Years later, his own label produced Xisto Ilimitado Branco, a white Douro still wine with Xisto in its name. The bottle is part of the still wine work that began at Niepoort and later continued under his own name.
Final Word
Luis Seabra Vinhos joins soil research, still wine work and old vineyard sites with a low intervention approach. Xisto Ilimitado Branco is a white Douro wine with Xisto in its name, spontaneous fermentation and lees ageing in used barrels and stainless steel.
