The Producer
Vintage and grape variety appeared together on Louis M. Martini's early single varietal wines. The St. Helena winery introduced temperature controlled fermentation and installed mechanical refrigeration for white wine fermentation. Cabernet Sauvignon was among the grapes on those labels. A label built around one grape identifies the variety in the bottle, while cooling equipment gives the cellar control over heat during yeast activity.
Place
The winery stands in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Monte Rosso Vineyard sits above 1,000 feet on the Sonoma side of the ridge dividing Napa and Sonoma counties, overlooking Agua Caliente and the Valley of the Moon. It became central to Martini's varietal red wine production, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Barbera.
Story
Louis Peter Martini joined the postwar family business and became winemaker in 1954. By 1968 he controlled production. He developed grape clones and pioneered wind machines for frost protection, while also introducing small lot fermentation, barrel ageing, and stainless steel fermentation tanks. Wind machines move air during frost events; small lots keep fermentations separate, and barrel ageing gives the wine time in contact with oak. The second generation changed both vineyard tools and cellar vessels.
Vineyards And Cellar
The current fermentation hall contains 36 open top stainless steel fermenters, ranging from 1.5 tons to 7 tons, all capable of punch downs. Small oak and concrete tanks sit alongside them. In an open top unit, a punch down pushes grape skins back into the must to extract color and tannin. This range allows lots to be handled at different scales. The winery is reintroducing larger oak barrels called puncheons and casks for ageing. Stainless steel stays neutral, oak adds flavor and slow oxygen exposure, and concrete provides another cellar material.
Wines
After E. & J. Gallo purchased the winery in 2002, the portfolio was concentrated on Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a red blend of all five red Bordeaux varieties: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec.
In The Glass
Black plum and fennel rise first, with blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry, and cassis filling the glass. The wine is youthful and dry, with marked astringency, a slightly herbal base, black licorice, and gravelly earthiness. Thick, velvety tannins give the palate a full, concentrated feel. Integrated oak brings sweet aromatics, resin, and torn mint through a long finish. Vanilla, cocoa, tobacco, black pepper, dried blueberry, mocha, and sweet spices add further aroma and flavor.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose the 2019 Louis M Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries Cabernet Sauvignon and a single vintage in its name, then spends 16 months in French and American oak barrels. It is enjoyable now and can age for years.
Anecdote
Louis M. Martini came to San Francisco from Genoa as a young teenager around 1900. He anticipated the repeal of Prohibition and built his Napa Valley winery in St. Helena in 1933. On December 5, he began selling wine, the first day such sales were legally permitted after Prohibition.
Final Word
Louis M. Martini's red portfolio centers on Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The winery pairs varietal labels and hillside vineyard work with a cellar built from stainless steel, oak, and concrete.
