Notable facts

The story

The Montalcino Idea

In 2010, Tina Berthelsen and Manfred travelled to Montalcino and fell in love with wine. During the trip, they imagined turning their own land near Helsingborg into a vineyard. The project was put on hold before planting. They returned to it later, carrying the idea from Montalcino back to property they already owned. At that point, they had the land and the vineyard idea, but no vines in the ground near Helsingborg. The vineyard followed the visit and their later return to the project.

The Producer

Vermouth, fruit distillate and gin sit alongside Lottenlund Estate's wines. Tina Berthelsen owns the estate in Allerum near Helsingborg, where the wine range covers still white, rosé and sparkling styles.

Place

The principal location is just outside Helsingborg, and another lies on the Bjäre peninsula north of Helsingborg. Both are coastal growing sites, with grapes grown at each.

Soil And Site

Each year, horse manure collected from a horse farm close to Lottenlund is spread in the vineyards. Horse manure is an organic soil amendment, so the practice belongs to field work rather than fermentation or ageing.

Story

Tina Berthelsen and Manfred planted the first stage of the vineyard in 2016. A second set of plantings followed in 2019. Lottenlund has approximately 45,000 vines divided between its vineyard sites. The plantings include Solaris, Muscaris, Donauriesling, Souvignier Gris, Cabernet Cortis and Pinot Nova.

Vineyards And Cellar

Jacob Grinsted is Lottenlund's viticulturist. The plantings are entirely PIWI varieties, which are bred for resistance to mildew, and Lottenlund says this allows farming without pesticides. The estate's laboratory analyses both grape must and finished wine. Some wines spend between two and four years in barrels, followed by another year in bottle.

Wines

Lotima Solaris and Lotima Selense are still white wines. Lotima Roselyn is the rosé, and the 2020 Roselyn bottling was made principally from Cabernet Cortis. Lotima Perlé brut is the sparkling wine made from Souvignier Gris, selected for its neutral profile.

In The Glass

Lotima Solaris opens with green apple, gooseberry, honeydew melon, lime and herbs. Its palate is fresh and nuanced. The wine rested in stainless steel for 20 months on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage during the first 12 months. Lees are spent yeast cells left after fermentation, and time on them can add body and savoury depth.

Lotima Roselyn has strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant, rhubarb and herbs, with a palate led by fresh berries. Lees ageing and bâtonnage are intended to deepen its mouthfeel and balance its fresh acidity.

Lotima Perlé is fresh and fruity, with yellow plum, herbs, green apple and lemon. Lotima Selense has oak, green apple, pear, gooseberry, butter, herbs and citrus. Selense 2019 was clean but subdued in flavour, with a closed aroma.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Lotima Perlé brut first. It is the traditional method sparkling wine made from Souvignier Gris, a variety selected for its neutral profile. Traditional method refers to bubbles made by a second fermentation in bottle. After its first fermentation, Perlé rests four to six months on lees with regular bâtonnage, the stirring of those lees. The bottles then spend between 24 and 36 months in the cellar at Kronovalls wine castle. The wine brings the grape, lees work and bottle ageing together.
