The Producer
Dr Henry Lindeman developed viticultural knowledge through visits to German and French wine regions, then established Lindeman's in the Hunter Valley in 1843. The early Cawarra property had cellars and equipment for making wine from grapes grown elsewhere in the region. Lindeman also maintained cellars in Sydney for ageing wine.
Lindeman's is an Australian wine company owned by Treasury Wine Estates. Its wines are consumed in more than 100 countries. The present range combines easy drinking Bin Series wines with single vineyard and regional bottles made by its winemakers and viticulturists.
Place
Lindeman's began in the Hunter Valley, while its modern wines and vineyard holdings span multiple Australian regions. Coonawarra was established in the Lindeman's portfolio in 1965, creating a defined regional group within the wider range.
A single region wine keeps its fruit tied to one named area on the label. The Coonawarra portfolio includes Limestone Ridge Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet, St George Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Pyrus Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Malbec. Elizabeth Marwood is the named winemaker for Coonawarra.
Wines
The Bin Series is the easy drinking part of the range and has expanded to 18 varieties. Other named Bin wines include Bin 65 Chardonnay, Bin 75 Riesling and Bin 30 Sparkling Rosé.
Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon is a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon with black plum, liquorice, savoury and honey aromas, followed by plum, spice and honey flavours on a medium bodied palate. Bin 50 Shiraz is medium bodied with a generous mouthfeel and aromas of black fruit, eucalyptus, pepper and woody notes.
Alongside the Bin Series, Lindeman's makes single vineyard and regional wines. The Coonawarra wines keep their vineyard and grape names visible, from Limestone Ridge Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet to Pyrus Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Malbec.
Final Word
In Europe, Lindeman's has moved its whole portfolio to lightweight bottles and optimized packaging recyclability. The company also uses solar powered renewable energy and efficient winery refrigeration at winery level to reduce its carbon footprint.
