The story

A Family Name On The Bottle

The Producer

Finca Sophenia is an estate in Gualtallary whose wines come from one vineyard. Roberto Luka founded the producer and was among the first people to plant vines in Gualtallary, when the land was still largely unknown for wine.

The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices. Agronomic management focuses on natural balance and the expression of individual parcels. Since 2021, Joaquin Martin has served as winemaker and manager of the winery and vineyards. In the cellar, the stated approach is minimal intervention with maximum attention, preserving the conditions created in the vineyard.

Place

Gualtallary is a district in Tupungato, within Mendoza's Uco Valley. Its sandy, rocky soil has strong natural drainage. Excess water moves away from the roots instead of pooling, a condition that generally supports more controlled vine growth and helps prevent a heavy, soft palate.

The place is therefore present through the ground as well as the address. Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc receive the site's dry, free draining foundation before fermentation and ageing shape the finished wines.

Soil And Site

The vineyard covers 130 hectares and was planted with selected French clones grafted onto American rootstocks. Clones provide chosen vine material above the graft, while rootstocks form the root system below it. Both decisions affect how the vines establish in the ground before fruit reaches the cellar.

The sandy, rocky ground also gives the vineyard a physical clarity. Strong drainage removes excess water, while the selected plant material keeps individual parcels part of the farming work.

Story

Roberto Luka planted vines in Gualtallary when the area was still described as virgin land, largely unknown for wine. The choice placed the producer in a developing wine district before its place in Mendoza was established.

In 1998, the estate recorded a decision to choose a different path. The wines began selling internationally in 2004 and eventually reached more than 25 countries. The chronology moves from early planting in unfamiliar ground to an export presence built around Gualtallary wines.

Vineyards And Cellar

Finca Sophenia manages the vineyard with a focus on natural balance, sustainability and the expression of each parcel. The cellar aims to reflect the work already completed in the vineyard and preserve the site's natural conditions. Freshness, balance, texture and respect for the grape guide the technical choices.

Sophenia Synthesis Malbec ferments with indigenous yeasts at controlled temperatures. Post fermentation maceration is adjusted through tasting. The wine then ages in French oak barrels for 14 months. The oak contributes smoke, tobacco and mocha notes, while the fermentation and maceration decisions keep the grape at the centre of the wine.

Wines

The range has two contrasting formats. Sophenia Synthesis Malbec 2021 is the red wine, a varietal Malbec aged in French oak. Finca Sophenia Karma Pet Nat 2025 is the sparkling wine, made from Sauvignon Blanc.

Synthesis places Malbec in a still red wine with oak ageing. Karma changes both the grape and the format, moving to Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wine. The bottles therefore present two distinct expressions from the producer's range.

In The Glass

Sophenia Synthesis Malbec brings violets, lavender, roses, black pepper, ripe plums and cherries to the nose. Smoke, tobacco and mocha follow from the French oak. The palate begins sweet and generous, then becomes full and concentrated, with a persistent finish.

The independent tasting profile adds dark berries, blue plum, blueberry, violet, oak and chocolate. It describes the wine as dry, rich and developed, with medium acidity, firm grip and a tight finish marked by alcohol warmth.

Karma Pet Nat 2025 is fruity, slightly aromatic and very fresh, with green apple, pineapple, gooseberry, white flowers and lemon. Elderflower, nettle, grapefruit and herbal notes add a green aromatic edge. The wine is dry and medium bodied, with refreshing yellow fruit, a large mousse, medium acidity and a short but fresh finish.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Sophenia Synthesis Malbec first. It is the varietal Malbec red, so the bottle keeps the focus on one grape and the producer's still wine style. Karma Pet Nat moves to Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wine, while Synthesis gives Malbec the first place in the tasting sequence.
