The story

The First Organic Hectares

The first 35 hectares Emiliana converted to organic farming struggled initially, and yields dropped. Organic farming excludes genetically modified organisms and toxic synthetic agrochemicals, so the change altered what could be applied in those vines. Emiliana's program uses products of natural origin, with organic fertilizers and compost incorporated for soil regeneration and carbon capture. The lower yields came at the start of the conversion, creating a direct farming cost while the organic approach was being put into practice.

The Producer

More than 1,000 hectares are managed organically and biodynamically at Emiliana Organic Vineyards. The producer has sought suitable Chilean valleys for each grape variety from the beginning, building a range that moves across Casablanca, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, Biobío and Limarí.

Adobe is Emiliana's Reserva line, made with organic grapes. Novas is the organic Gran Reserva line. The range also includes Coyam and Gê, with Gê identified as a Colchagua Valley blend. Emiliana's farming and winemaking use products of natural origin, carrying that choice from the vineyard into the cellar.

Place

Emiliana's vineyards spread across Chilean valleys with different conditions for different grapes. The named regions include Casablanca, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, Biobío and Limarí.

At Los Morros in Maipo, Emiliana produces its highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. At Mulchén in Biobío, the vineyards grow Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Casablanca is the home of the producer's Viognier, including Novas Viognier.

Soil And Site

The vineyard program uses products of natural origin, with organic fertilizers and compost incorporated for soil regeneration and carbon capture. Compost returns organic matter to the ground while the farming program excludes genetically modified organisms and toxic synthetic agrochemicals.

These choices govern what enters the vineyard before the grapes reach the cellar. The organic and biodynamic management applies across Emiliana's vineyard holdings.

Story

The first Coyam vintage was 2001, and Emiliana was certified organic by 2001. The company also became the first Latin American winery to produce a biodynamically certified wine and the first Chilean company to receive Regenerative Organic Certified status.

In January 2023, Emiliana obtained B Corp Certification. The timeline joins a named wine with successive farming and business certifications, while the vineyards continue under organic and biodynamic management.

Vineyards And Cellar

Emiliana's Las Palmeras and Los Robles cellars are in Colchagua, and both were designed to minimize environmental impact. The producer uses products of natural origin in farming and winemaking, while its organic program excludes genetically modified organisms and toxic synthetic agrochemicals.

Organic fertilizers and compost are incorporated for soil regeneration and carbon capture. All Emiliana wines are certified to use the Vegan Society trademark, indicating production without animal derived products.

Wines

Adobe is the Reserva range, made with organic grapes. Novas is the organic Gran Reserva range. Coyam is a blend whose composition changes with the climatic conditions of each year while retaining its spirit and quality.

Gê is a Colchagua Valley blend. The portfolio therefore includes range wines built around organic farming, a vintage changing blend, and a named regional blend.

In The Glass

Gê opens with black fruit, including plum and blackberry, followed by graphite, cedar, clove, lavender and rosemary. Its palate has a broad entry, ripe tannins and crisp acidity.

Coyam 2017 is ripe and intense, with sweet cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry jam and bright red berries. Oak barriques bring vanilla and toast, while firm tannins and a touch of alcohol warmth remain through the finish.

A Bottle To Understand It

Novas Viognier is the first bottle to open. It comes from Casablanca Valley and belongs to Emiliana's organic Gran Reserva range, putting one grape and one valley on the label together.

The wine has a golden yellow colour and aromas of white fruit, apricot, peach and white flowers. Good body and balanced acidity support the palate, giving the bottle a clear white wine expression within Emiliana's broader Chilean range.

Anecdote

In 2020, the Global Organic Wine Masters selected Emiliana's Coyam 2017 among the ten best organic wines in the world through a blind tasting. In that format, judges assess bottles without seeing their labels. Coyam 2017 was the bottle placed in the competition's selection.
