The Producer
Dominio Basconcillos is a family estate in Ribera del Duero, conceived in the style of a French château. José Maria Basconcillos established the family vision, and his daughters Maria José and Carmen continue the winery's principles. Two generations currently work toward a shared goal for the estate and its wines.
The vineyard and winery define one property. The château concept is therefore joined to an operating estate, with the family working across the place where grapes are grown and wine is made.
Place
Ribera del Duero is the appellation attached to Viña Magna Crianza, placing the wine within one of Spain's named red wine regions. Dominio Basconcillos works inside that appellation, with the estate vineyard occupying the slopes historically called Paraje del Alto del Cura.
The place name links the family estate to a regional red wine category, while the named slopes give the vineyard a more specific local address.
Soil And Site
The vineyard sits at 905 metres, a high setting where ripening generally proceeds more slowly and acidity is more easily retained. The estate's wines are described as fresh and concentrated, qualities that fit the general effect of high altitude on vine growth.
The vines run along gentle slopes in Paraje del Alto del Cura. Sloping ground allows water to move downhill after rain, while the packet does not establish a specific soil type for the parcels.
Story
José Maria Basconcillos set the family vision for the winery. Maria José and Carmen continue those principles, and two generations currently work together across the estate.
The family has used sustainable and natural practices in the vineyard for 20 years. The land has become a haven of biodiversity that brims with life, giving the family story a direct farming consequence in the vineyard.
Vineyards And Cellar
Harvested grapes are selected strictly in the vineyard before being carried in 16 kg containers. Small containers reduce pressure on the grapes during the short journey, helping them reach the winery in good condition.
The grapes arrive at the winery within one hour of harvest. Rapid transfer limits the time between picking and cellar work, keeping the fruit in the conditions intended for processing.
Wines
The named range includes Viña Magna Roble, Viña Magna Crianza, Viña Magna Reserva, Dominio Basconcillos ecologic, Finca de Altura, Alto del Cura and Santé au Rosé.
The 2021 Viña Magna Crianza is an organic red Crianza from Ribera del Duero. Its composition is 92% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec, giving the range a clearly defined red blend alongside its other named releases.
In The Glass
Viña Magna Crianza opens with ripe fruit, dried herbs and creamy oak. The palate is powerful and spicy, with round tannins. The house description adds velvety texture, a silky body, mature tannins, freshness, concentration and a long finish.
The combination of ripe fruit, dried herbs and oak gives the wine a warm aromatic register, while the round tannins and fresh palate keep the finish extended.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Viña Magna Crianza. It matured for 14.5 months in French oak barrels, giving the bottle a clearly defined cellar period within the range.
French oak allows gradual oxygen exchange during barrel maturation. The Crianza designation, Ribera del Duero appellation and three grape varieties place the bottle firmly within the estate's red wine work.
Final Word
Dominio Basconcillos combines French château design with family farming on the slopes of Paraje del Alto del Cura, supported by sustainable and natural vineyard practices.
