The Producer

Percy Månsson successfully planted vines in Sweden in 1994. Domän Sånana bottled its first wine in 1999. Annual production is approximately 2,000 bottles of red and white wine.

In 2000, Månsson planted 600 Rondo vines and trialled 54 additional varieties, four vines of each. Today, the estate grows only PIWI grape varieties, which are bred for fungal disease resistance. The vineyard is one of Sweden’s first commercial vineyards near the south coast of Skåne. Grapes are grown in Österlen, and the wines are vinified and bottled there.

Place

Domän Sånana lies a couple of kilometres south of the fishing village of Skillinge. Its postal address is Hävdavägen 36 in Borrby. The sea is 300 metres south of the vineyard and contributes to a mild microclimate.

A mild microclimate generally helps grapes ripen in a cool climate by reducing cold stress and extending the ripening window. Domän Sånana pairs this coastal setting with PIWI grape varieties, bred for fungal disease resistance.

Wines

The range comprises sparkling wines named Sånana Sparkling 2019, Sånana Sparkling 2020 and Sånana Sparkling 2021. The 2019 is approximately equal parts Solaris and Souvignier Gris, while the 2021 combines Solaris, Souvignier Gris and Muscaris.

The 2019 is a dry traditional method sparkling wine with second fermentation in bottle. The 2021 is Brut Nature and contains less than 0.3 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres. Brut Nature is an exceptionally dry sparkling style. The 2020 is youthful, juicy, dry and fruit driven, with balance, a sparse finish and a hint of lime.

In The Glass

Sånana Sparkling 2019 has a somewhat developed character, with almond, gooseberry, brioche, light chocolate, white flowers, apple and yellow plum.

The 2021 is highly fresh and nuanced, with yellow apple, nougat, pineapple, white flowers, biscuit and orange. Second fermentation in bottle can bring bread and biscuit notes, and a blind tasting of this wine also found green apple and citrus.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Sånana Sparkling 2021. It combines Solaris, Souvignier Gris and Muscaris in a Brut Nature made by the traditional method, with disgorgement on 6 July 2024. It puts the estate’s current grape composition, bottle fermentation and dry style into one bottle.

Final Word

The Månsson family has held the land since 1873. Domän Sånana remains a family vineyard on the Skåne coast, with grapes grown and wines vinified and bottled in Österlen.
