Notable facts

The story

A Three Year Old's Run

During harvest, three year old Jean Claude Mas escaped from his mother and ran 2.5 kilometers to his grandfather's cellar. He was born in Pézenas, in the Languedoc wine region, and had entered the family wine world before he could name it as a vocation. The route ended at his grandfather's cellar, where the child wanted to be. He left his mother and made the cellar his destination. That childhood scene sits at the beginning of the Mas family line that later became Domaines Paul Mas.

The Producer

Domaines Paul Mas is the multi estate Languedoc group built by Jean Claude Mas from the Mas family vineyard line. The group has grown to 850 hectares across 15 châteaux and domains, with 45 grape varieties across 17 terroirs. Its portfolio includes Côté Mas, Arrogant Frog, Astelia and Château Martinolles.

Arrogant Frog joined the portfolio as a wine brand, alongside Côté Mas wines that range from rosé to red and white styles. The company works with respect for family heritage and rural roots while seeking excellence.

Place

The family vineyard line began in Pézenas, in the Languedoc wine region. Today Clos Astelia sits between Montagnac and Villeveyrac and has served as the company's operational center since 2014.

This is a multi estate operation, with a named working center alongside vineyards spread across diverse terroirs and several wine lines.

Wines

Côté Mas Rosorange 2024 is a rosé made with white grapes and Grenache Gris. Skin maceration for 6 to 8 days at controlled temperature gives the must a light amber colour. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in two stages on the skins before the wine is pressed and blended back. The nose brings candied orange peel and quince with almond nuances reminiscent of cherry pits. The 2024 wine also shows stone fruit, fruitiness, a savoury twist and depth.

Arrogant Frog Cabernet Merlot is a red wine with a balanced palate, smooth tannins and a long finish. It can age for up to 5 years.

Côté Mas Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes post fermentation maceration at 25°C for 18 days. 20 percent of the wine ages partially in barrels aged one to two years for 4 months, while 80 percent matures in temperature controlled stainless steel.

Final Word

Domaines Paul Mas carries the Mas family name from a first vineyard in Pézenas into a Languedoc operation with multiple châteaux, domains, brands and grape varieties. Clos Astelia is the working center, while the range reaches from rosé to red and white wines.
