The Producer

Agiorgitiko, a red grape, and Moschofilero, a white grape, sit at the centre of Domaine Skouras's range. Based in Malandreni in Argolida, the domaine works with wines from Nemea and Mantineia, two areas where altitude and temperature shape ripeness, acidity and harvest timing.

The stated approach is minimally interventionist. The wines include the long established Megas Oenos, varietal Agiorgitiko in Saint George, and Moschofilero led whites, with each bottle receiving its own cellar treatment.

Place

Nemea vineyards run from 450 to 1,050 metres, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity and freshness. The highest Nemea subzone is cooler, producing wines with freshness, refined tannins and pronounced aromas. Nemea is also the protected designation surrounding the Malandreni winery.

Mantineia is one of Greece's coldest wine regions. Low temperatures push the harvest as late as mid October, giving Moschofilero a long, cool growing season. At Gymno, a privately owned Agiorgitiko vineyard and winery stands alongside the principal winery outside Malandreni.

Story

George Skouras and his wife Ourania remain active in the daily operations of the winery while their children Dimitris and Stella join the family enterprise. Dimitris oversees the vineyards and winemaking department, managing every stage of production. Stella leads wine tourism and public relations, designing experiences that bring visitors closer to wine.

The family roles now cover vineyard work, cellar work, hospitality and public relations. Dimitris studied Viticulture and Oenology in France, while Stella studied Economics and Marketing in Scotland.

Vineyards And Cellar

Minimal intervention guides the cellar work. Peplo Rosé receives separate treatment for each grape component: Agiorgitiko ages in acacia, Syrah stays on its lees in stainless steel, and Mavrofilero remains in amphora with its skins for four months.

Lees are spent yeast cells left after fermentation, and keeping wine on them can add texture. Skin contact leaves the grape skins with the fermenting wine, extracting colour, aroma and tannin. Acacia, stainless steel and amphora therefore give the three components different ageing conditions before they come together in the rosé.

The producer has also added a winemaking facility in Zevgolatio, Mantineia, at the heart of the PDO zone for Moschofilero.

Wines

Peplo Rosé is the range's rosé bottling, combining Agiorgitiko, Syrah and Mavrofilero. Saint George is the varietal Nemea red, made entirely from Agiorgitiko and aged 12 months in French barrique.

Megas Oenos is the longer aged red blend, made from 80% Agiorgitiko and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The three wines place a grape led rosé, a single variety Nemea red and a longer aged red blend beside one another.

In The Glass

Peplo Rosé brings ripe cherry and raspberry aromas, followed by flowers and rose petal. The palate is medium bodied, with medium to high acidity and a light sensation of ripe tannin.

Megas Oenos 2022 shows blackcurrant, black plum, cedar and spice. The palate is concentrated and full bodied, with fresh lift and a long savoury finish.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Peplo Rosé High Elevation 2024. It combines Agiorgitiko, Syrah and Mavrofilero in equal thirds in one rosé. Saint George uses Agiorgitiko alone, while Megas Oenos combines Agiorgitiko with Cabernet Sauvignon. Peplo places the widest set of grape varieties under one label and keeps their separate cellar treatments visible together.

Anecdote

In 1986, George Skouras founded his winery and released Megas Oenos. The operation began in Pyrgela, a small village outside Argos, with a modest production facility, rented vineyards and rented equipment. Bottling was done by hand. Megas Oenos was released at the same moment the winery began, linking the first bottle to the first working day of the domaine.

Final Word

Domaine Skouras brings Nemea Agiorgitiko and Mantineia Moschofilero into one range, with cellar work that moves from acacia and stainless steel to amphora and French barrique.
