Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils

Burgundy domaine with indigenous yeast fermentation, whole clusters and Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses.

The producer

Domaine Robert Groffier Père et Fils was founded by Jules Groffier in the 1950s and is now managed by his grandson Nicolas Groffier. Groffier holds one hectare of Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, making him the largest owner of that climat. Hand picked grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts, without fining or filtering. Nicolas used new oak from Tronçais for the 2021 wines to give them roundness.

The Producer

Nicolas Groffier uses whole cluster fermentation in the cellar. Stems stay with the grapes during fermentation, a technique that can bring perfume, spice and tannin. All the 2021 Robert Groffier wines used it.

Groffier is the grandson of Jules Groffier, who founded the domaine in the 1950s. Hand picked grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts, without fining or filtering. Since the 2014 vintage, the domaine has sold only half of annual production, ageing previous vintages in its cellars until they are judged ready to drink.

Place

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses is a named climat, meaning a defined vineyard parcel, in Burgundy's Premier Cru hierarchy. Premier Cru identifies a vineyard level above village wine, so the label carries both the village and the specific climat. Groffier is the largest owner of Les Amoureuses.

Wines

The range moves from Bourgogne bottles to named village and Premier Cru wines. Bourgogne Les Jardins de Marie et Léa and Bourgogne Passetoutgrain are listed as 2023 red wines. Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is a 2023 red wine from the Côte de Nuits, alongside Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Hauts-Doix.

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses is listed as a 2021 red wine. The bottles move from regional Bourgogne and Passetoutgrain addresses to named Burgundy sites and Premier Cru vineyards.

Final Word

Jules Groffier's family domaine now combines named Burgundy parcels with Nicolas Groffier's whole cluster cellar work, from Bourgogne reds to Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses.
