Domaine Remi Landier

Rémi Landier makes Fins Bois Cognac from Ugni Blanc, distilling on lees and ageing in French oak.

The producer

Domaine Rémi Landier is a Cognac house in Rouillac's Fins Bois region, stewarded by Géraldine Landier in its fifth family generation. The vineyard is planted primarily with Ugni Blanc on clay limestone ground, producing softer, fruitier Cognacs than nearby Grande Champagne. Distillation on the lees adds body and aroma, while French oak from Limousin and Allier shapes the maturing spirit. The range includes VS, VSOP and XO Cognac, alongside Pineau des Charentes and Charente vin de pays.

The Producer

Before the Landier family acquired the property, Benedictine monks of the Royal Abbey of Bassac had cultivated its vineyard and distillery for over 250 years. Domaine Rémi Landier is now stewarded by Géraldine Landier as a fifth generation Cognac house. Its Cognacs come from Ugni Blanc, a white grape variety prized for producing a fresh base wine suitable for distillation.

The portfolio centres on Cognac, with Pineau des Charentes and Charente vin de pays also included. The house works across several forms of Charentais production, from young VS Cognac through VSOP and XO to longer matured family reserves.

Place

The property stands at 133 Rue de Châteauneuf in Rouillac, within the Fins Bois region of Cognac. Fins Bois is a Cognac growing region, and the local clay limestone ground gives the spirits a softer, fruitier profile than nearby Grande Champagne.

Rouillac is therefore tied to both the label and the style. The place supplies the base for Ugni Blanc Cognac with a rounded fruit profile, while the house's separate Pineau des Charentes and Charente vin de pays products extend the portfolio beyond distilled spirits.

Soil And Site

Clay limestone ground combines clay's ability to retain moisture with limestone's drainage. For the vine, that balance supports steady ripening and keeps the soil from drying too quickly. The resulting Cognacs are described as softer and fruitier than those from nearby Grande Champagne, giving the Fins Bois address a distinct place within Cognac's regional hierarchy.

Story

The Landier family has led the house for five generations, with the family line reaching back to the 1890s. Géraldine Landier is the current steward. The property she oversees carries an older history, having been cultivated by Benedictine monks of the Royal Abbey of Bassac for over 250 years before the family acquired it.

That history remains attached to a working vineyard and distillery. The present portfolio includes Cognac, Pineau des Charentes and Charente vin de pays, all made within the Charentais setting described by the house.

Vineyards And Cellar

Ugni Blanc is the primary grape. Its wine is distilled on the lees, meaning the fine sediment left after fermentation remains present during distillation. This technique can add body and aroma to the spirit.

The Cognacs mature in French oak from Limousin and Allier. Oak ageing gives the spirit time to soften while contributing colour and spice. Réserve Familiale is aged for a minimum of 20 years in oak, placing it well beyond the younger categories in the range.

Wines

The Cognac range is organised through three familiar categories: VS, VSOP and XO. VS sits at the younger end, VSOP occupies the middle position, and XO represents the more developed standard expression. Réserve Familiale forms a separate family reserve with extended oak ageing.

The portfolio also includes Pineau des Charentes and Charente vin de pays. These bottles sit outside the VS, VSOP and XO Cognac sequence, giving the house both distilled spirits and other Charentais products.

In The Glass

VSOP Cognac shows dark gold with copper highlights. Its finish is long and fresh, with a slightly minty edge. The profile combines fruit and spice, with mango, clove and vanilla marking the close.

XO Cognac opens with fresh flowers, grapefruit, vanilla and spices. The palate is soft and ample, carrying pepper and black liquorice before a fruity finish. Its overall character is light and round despite the richness of the aromatic opening.

A Bottle To Understand It

Open XO Cognac first. It is the oldest of the three named VS, VSOP and XO categories, and it brings the house's longer oak maturation into the glass. Fresh flowers and grapefruit lead the nose, followed by vanilla and spice. Pepper and black liquorice give the palate its savoury edge, while the finish returns to fruit.

Final Word
