Domaine Michel Gros

Domaine Michel Gros makes Vosne-Romanée red wines, including Clos des Réas, a walled site harvested two or three days earlier than the village.

The producer

Domaine Michel Gros is rooted in Vosne-Romanée and works with village wine and Clos des Réas. The walled Clos des Réas allows harvests two or three days earlier than the rest of the village. The village wine brings red cherry, raspberry rock candy and sweet strawberry, with a soft, supple, tangy palate. Clos des Réas brings oak spice and smoke, with freshness and a floral turn.

Notable facts

The story

The Richebourg Purchase

In 1882, Alphonse Gros purchased two hectares of Richebourg, vineyard land that remains under the Gros family today. The purchase added a named holding to the family property. The land has stayed with the family across the generations, while Domaine Michel Gros represents one current branch of the Gros name. Alphonse's transaction therefore has a physical continuation, with the Richebourg vineyard land remaining under Gros ownership. The original parcel remains attached to its name and ownership.

The Producer

Domaine Michel Gros works with village Vosne-Romanée and Clos des Réas, a walled vineyard whose enclosure creates a protective microclimate. Michel Gros brings meticulous attention to detail to the work. The range includes a village wine and a named Premier Cru site wine.

Place

Clos des Réas sits within Vosne-Romanée behind a wall built between 1800 and 1810. The enclosure allows harvests two or three days earlier than in the rest of the village, giving the parcel a different harvest calendar from its neighbours.

Wines

Two red wines give the range its hierarchy. The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas Michel Gros is the village level wine. The 2021 Vosne Romanée Premier Cru Clos des Réas Michel Gros is the named site wine. Premier Cru is the Burgundy vineyard level above village wine and below Grand Cru, so the labels move from a village appellation to a classified vineyard.

Final Word

The Clos des Réas parcel has about 50 centimetres of red soil with limestone above oligocene marl, salmon coloured veins and large limestone blocks.
