Lardière's Forty Two Years

Jacques Lardière spent 42 years responsible for the winemaking and bottling of all Louis Jadot wines. In 2013, he retired from that role but continued as an adviser. His tenure covered the complete production of the house's wines, from winemaking through bottling. The retirement changed his daily position without ending his connection to Louis Jadot, leaving the house with his experience available in an advisory role.

The Producer

The label separates two kinds of Louis Jadot wine. As a négociant, the house purchases grapes from growers across Burgundy, then vinifies and bottles them on site. Wines made solely from vineyards owned by the house carry a rectangular box at the bottom of the label reading Domaine Louis Jadot.

The owned vineyards include 280 acres in Côte d'Or Premier and Grand Cru plots. The range therefore joins purchased grapes with wines from vineyards controlled by the house, while keeping the production roles distinct on the bottle.

Place

The Côte de Nuits is the Burgundy subregion named on Louis Jadot's Grand Cru wines. In Burgundy, Grand Cru is the highest vineyard classification, so the name on the label identifies a classified vineyard rather than a broad regional wine.

Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, and Chambertin Clos de Bèze appear as Grand Cru wines from the Côte de Nuits. The house also bottles Premier Cru reds, including Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses and Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques.

Vineyards And Cellar

Louis Jadot owns Résonance in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Founded in 2013, the property cultivates 139 acres exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In 1996, Louis Jadot partnered with Tonnellerie Vicard to create Cadus, a cooperage producing French oak barrels in the Burgundian tradition. A cooperage makes the barrels used for wine ageing, with the oak vessel influencing oxygen contact and spice during élevage.

Wines

The Côte de Nuits range centres on red Grand Cru wines, including Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Premier Cru reds add wines from named vineyards at the level below Grand Cru.

Louis Jadot also uses réplis in Beaujolais blends and Mâcon blends. The practice adds a percentage of wine from a higher appellation to village level expressions, a blending choice used to increase complexity and quality.

In The Glass

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a fragrant floral bouquet with power and depth. The 2022 wine brings fresh aromas, clear red fruit, and a fresh palate.

Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2022 opens with black cherry, hedgerow fruit, and peppery wood spice. The palate balances power and elegance through finely wrought texture, finishing with lingering berries and oak.

A Bottle To Understand It

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is the first bottle. It is a red Côte de Nuits Grand Cru whose profile begins with violets and red berries and finishes with subtle tannins. The single classified vineyard name keeps the bottle on one site before the other Grand Cru names enter the range.

Anecdote

In 1945, Kobrand became the sole United States importer of Louis Jadot Burgundies. In February 1985, the owners of Kobrand acquired Maison Louis Jadot. The company moved from importing the wines to owning the house, and Kobrand has held ownership since the acquisition.

Final Word

The Jadot family's Burgundian roots began when a family member arrived in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards.
