The First Chablis Vines

In 867, King Charles the Bald donated a cella, a monastery cell, in Chablis to the canons of Saint-Martin of Tours. The canons planted the first Chablis vines there, and their landed heritage and commitment to quality helped build the reputation of Chablis wines over the centuries. The site kept physical traces of that beginning. A thirteenth-century press remains associated with the Obédiencerie, while the building is listed as a Historic Monument.
