The Producer

Every year, Domaine de Font-Sane adds organic compost to its vineyards to maintain soil health. Established in 1860, the domaine lies in the heart of the Gigondas vineyard in the Rhône Valley, where Véronique Cunty-Peysson and her husband Bernard perpetuate the family winemaking know how. The domaine prioritizes quality over quantity. Its wines are made through a combination of traditional methods and modern techniques.

Place

The Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range protects the vineyard. Mountain shelter reduces direct exposure to weather, a physical condition that can influence vine growth and ripening. The portfolio carries both Gigondas and Ventoux appellation names, separating the wines by regulated place as well as by cuvée.

Gigondas Tradition and Gigondas Terrasses des Dentelles carry the Gigondas name. Ventoux Vieilles Vignes carries Ventoux. The appellation on the label therefore identifies the place behind each line of the range.

Story

Romain recently arrived on the estate after completing a Master's degree in International Wine Business. He oversees commercial operations, while Véronique and Bernard continue to perpetuate the domaine's winemaking know how. The family operation now includes a distinct commercial role alongside the work of making the wines.

The domaine is also evaluating conversion to certified organic farming. The change remains under consideration, placing a possible certification step alongside the existing work in the vineyards.

Vineyards And Cellar

The winemaking approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques. Traditional cellar practice can preserve established methods of fermentation and handling, while modern equipment can improve control over those operations. The domaine's stated priority is quality over quantity.

Wines

The red portfolio has three named lines: Gigondas Tradition, Gigondas Terrasses des Dentelles and Ventoux Vieilles Vignes. The first two are Gigondas reds, while Ventoux Vieilles Vignes is the Ventoux red.

The rosé wines are Gigondas Rosé Plaisir Partagé and Ventoux Rosé Émotion d'un Soir. Gigondas White Renaissance completes the portfolio as a white wine. The range is therefore divided by colour, appellation and cuvée name.

In The Glass

The 2017 Gigondas Tradition shows fresh dark fruit, fresh meat, violets and cracked pepper, followed by a lengthy finish. Its palate is concentrated, with charming sweetness and fine tannins.

Ventoux Vieilles Vignes has a bright purple colour. Its nose is rich and intense, with dark berries, pepper and floral elements. The palate is smooth and rounded, with soft, silky tannins that make the wine approachable.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Gigondas Tradition. It is a red Gigondas cuvée from the domaine's home appellation, with the traditional name on the label. It places the estate's central wine address in one bottle before the range moves to the separate Terrasses des Dentelles bottling or the Ventoux Vieilles Vignes red.

Final Word

Font-Sane is a family managed Gigondas domaine, with a portfolio that reaches from Gigondas reds to Ventoux, rosé and white wines.
