The Producer
Marco Cirillo leads viticulture, winemaking and winery management at Cirillo Estate Wines. The family estate works historic Grenache and Semillon vineyards in the Barossa Valley, then extends the range with single vineyard Shiraz, Mataro and additional Grenache bottlings.
The range includes ancestor vine wines alongside site specific bottles. Cirillo's work keeps the grape varieties and vineyard parcels visible across red, rosé and other single vineyard wines.
Place
The Barossa Valley lies about 60 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia. Cirillo's vineyard story is tied to Light Pass, the small district where Vincent Cirillo became custodian of historic plantings.
The Grenache vineyard lies in the old Seigersdorf or Light Pass area of the Barossa Valley. The local name places the vineyard within a specific district rather than treating the valley as one undifferentiated address.
Soil And Site
Barossa's ancient soils are often shallow and low fertility. They limit vine vigour and yields, and the estate links those conditions to generous fruit intensity.
The Barossa Old Vine Charter defines an Ancestor Vine as at least 125 years old. Cirillo's ancestor vine bottlings sit within that age category, connecting the label to both vineyard history and the physical conditions of the Barossa ground.
Story
Vincent Cirillo immigrated from Calabria to South Australia in 1946, carrying more than 400 years and nine generations of family winemaking history. When the family moved to Light Pass in the early 1970s, Vincent became custodian of the historic vineyards.
Fruit from those vineyards went to Rockford, Peter Lehmann, St Hallett and Torbreck. Marco Cirillo now leads viticulture, winemaking and winery management, bringing the family's vineyard work and cellar under one current direction.
Vineyards And Cellar
Cirillo describes its farming practice as sustainable. For the last 50 years, only Vincent and Marco Cirillo have pruned the Grenache vineyard.
Handpicked fruit is destemmed into open fermenters and kept very cool. Fermentation uses natural and wild yeasts, with minimal intervention in the cellar.
For the 2025 Rosato, fruit from the more vigorous northwestern section of the vineyard is gently crushed and slowly pressed over four to six hours. Cool fermentation in stainless steel at 15 to 16 degrees Celsius, followed by early bottling, preserves freshness and aromatic lift.
Wines
The range pairs ancestor vine Grenache and Semillon with site specific Shiraz, Mataro and additional Grenache bottlings. The 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache is the single vineyard red, while the 2025 Ancestor Vine Grenache Rosato is the varietal rosé.
The Mataro has a separate origin within the old Grenache vineyard. Cuttings came from nine rouge Mataro vines growing among the Grenache, giving the range a bottle with its own vine material and vineyard history.
In The Glass
The 2019 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache opens with bright red fruit, chinotto and spice. It is medium bodied and long, with cherry, sarsaparilla, white pepper and savoury notes across the palate. The wine can improve for more than a decade in bottle.
The Rosato smells of red currant, cranberry and soft rose florals, with a savoury edge. Vibrant acidity and silky texture carry strawberry, cherry, pomegranate and delicate spice to a mouth watering, persistent finish.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose the 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache. It is a single vineyard Grenache from sandy soils in the Light Pass area of the Barossa Valley, matured in seasoned hogsheads.
The producer describes the wine as more about the variety than the oak. The bottle places sandy soil, Grenache and seasoned hogshead élevage in one red wine, with the single vineyard making its range position clear.
Anecdote
During Australia's vine pull program in the 1980s, Vincent Cirillo refused to remove the historic vines. He had become custodian of the Light Pass vineyards after the family moved there in the early 1970s, and he recognized the plantings as part of Australia's viticultural history. Vincent remained steadfast. The 1848 vines survived the program. For the last 50 years, only Vincent and Marco Cirillo have pruned the Grenache vineyard. The surviving vineyard now sits within a range that includes Grenache and Semillon bottlings.
Final Word
Cirillo Estate Wines keeps its Barossa work close to old Grenache and Semillon vineyards, then extends the range through Shiraz, Mataro, Grenache and Rosato. Marco Cirillo leads the vineyard and cellar, with minimal intervention and natural and wild yeasts shaping the house method.
