The Producer
Château Poujeaux is a red Bordeaux château in the Moulis appellation, owned by the Cuvelier family. Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne co-manage the property with enthusiasm and determination. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the grape composition, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The estate's wines are regarded as some of Bordeaux's best value wines and as the finest wine from Moulis. The current team combines family ownership with a changed approach to farming and winemaking.
Place
Moulis is Château Poujeaux's primary appellation within Bordeaux's Left Bank. The wine is also listed under Haut-Médoc, while Moulis is the more precise producer address.
An appellation names the defined place attached to a wine. Château Poujeaux is outside the formal 1855 classification, yet the estate is regarded as the finest wine produced from Moulis.
Soil And Site
The vineyards are gravel based. Gravel drains water quickly and stores warmth, physical properties that generally support ripening in red wine vineyards. The estate's gravel ground is associated with minerality in the finished wine.
Story
In 2008, the Cuvelier family acquired Château Poujeaux from Jean Theil. Matthieu Cuvelier took charge after the purchase, and the wines have gradually become better since 2009. The estate is currently producing the finest wines in the history of the château.
The change appears across successive releases. The property moved from a new family acquisition to a period of steadily improving wine under Matthieu Cuvelier's leadership.
Vineyards And Cellar
The estate farms 68 hectares. The grape composition is 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Farming techniques changed during Matthieu Cuvelier's tenure.
Fermentation uses whole berries in small stainless steel vats, oak barrels and cement tanks. The cuvaison lasts twenty five days, keeping the wine in contact with the grape skins long enough to build colour and tannin. Ageing takes place in about 40% new French oak for an average of twelve months. New oak contributes spice and controlled oxygen exchange while the time in barrel softens the tannins.
Wines
The range centres on Château Poujeaux, a red Moulis wine made in 2020, 2021 and 2023 vintages. The label stays constant while the vintage changes, making year comparison central to the range.
Château Poujeaux reaches peak maturity between five and twenty years after vintage. The wine is therefore built for development in bottle, with each release offering a different point along the same estate style.
In The Glass
Château Poujeaux opens with blackcurrant and cassis, followed by flowers, licorice and smoke. Dark cherry and spice sit behind the first fruit.
The palate is medium bodied, vibrant and crisp, with a chewy texture. Acidity supplies freshness and grip, while the tannins remain integrated. A classic peppery Cabernet backbone brings muscle with balance, and age adds further balance and elegance.
A Bottle To Understand It
Open Château Poujeaux 2020 first. It is the red Moulis bottling carrying the château's name, made from the estate's four grape varieties and belonging to the same named wine as the 2021 and 2023 vintages.
The bottle puts the appellation, grape composition and estate name together before the later vintages are opened for comparison.
Anecdote
In the sixteenth century, Gaston De L'Isle held Château Poujeaux. He also owned Château Latour. Both Bordeaux properties therefore appear in the ownership history of the same man, linking Poujeaux to another château through one named owner long before the Cuvelier family acquired the estate.
Final Word
Château Poujeaux is a Moulis red with Cabernet Sauvignon at its core, gravel based vineyards, whole berry fermentation and French oak ageing. Its palate gains balance as the wine develops in bottle.
