The Horses of Pauillac

When Alfred Tesseron brought draft horses back to the Pontet-Canet vineyard in the early 2000s, the sight was unusual enough in Pauillac that neighbouring châteaux called to ask what was happening. Tractors had worked these rows for decades; horses were an anachronism in the Médoc. Tesseron's explanation was practical: tractor tyres had compacted the soil to a depth that blocked root penetration, and the biodynamic conversion required farming the soil without that mechanical pressure. He sourced the first horses from neighbouring farms before the estate established its own team. By the time Pontet-Canet achieved Demeter certification, the horse teams had become the estate's most photographed feature—appearing in every visiting journalist's pictures and every written profile of the château. Pontet-Canet today keeps its own horse team year-round.
