In 1959, Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport began its transformation from a regional airfield into a commercial hub capable of receiving jet aircraft. The programme required land: new runways, taxiways, terminal buildings, and the ring of logistics and warehousing that surrounds a functioning modern airport. Mérignac's gravel plateau — agricultural and viticultural land for centuries — was the available ground. Estates and smallholdings across the commune were acquired and built over in the years that followed. Château Picque-Caillou, on its gravel beds, remained in production through the transformation. By the mid-1960s, its vine rows sat immediately beside the airport's perimeter — harvests continuing each autumn in one of the most unlikely addresses at which a Bordeaux château still produces wine.
