In the first half of the nineteenth century, Frank Phélan—a wine merchant from County Tipperary, Ireland, who had come to Bordeaux and built a trading business—assembled a series of parcels in Saint-Estèphe. The land he acquired included plots that had previously formed part of the Ségur family holdings: the same aristocratic dynasty whose vineyards had spread across the Médoc to include Lafite, Latour, and Calon-Ségur at their peak. When Phélan consolidated his holdings under a single estate name, he took both parts—his own Irish surname and the French noble name attached to the ground—and joined them. The result was Phélan-Ségur: a compound of a Tipperary merchant's ambition and the echo of a French wine dynasty that had already passed its peak. Frank Phélan died in 1841, leaving the estate he had named to whatever ownership would follow. Nearly two centuries later, the name he assembled from those two sources appears, unchanged, on every bottle the château produces.
