Chateau Maris

Château Maris is a 45-hectare estate in Félines-Minervois, within AOC Minervois La Livinière, farming Syrah, Grenache and Carignan without chemicals for more than 25 years and making an unfined, unfiltered Muscat orange wine.

The producer

Château Maris began in 1997 when Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired a vineyard in Félines-Minervois. Eden found soil damaged by heavy pesticide use and applied 20 tons of fertiliser per hectare, made from twice that amount of manure. The estate now farms 32 hectares in small plots among natural areas on well-exposed hillsides, with Ecocert, Biodyvin and Demeter certifications.

The red range centres on Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. La Touge shows medium purple colour with blackberry, bramble, blueberry, black cherry, vanilla, cedar and chocolate aromas, while Natural Selection takes Muscat into unfined, unfiltered orange wine, bottled in recycled glass. The cellar follows the same environmental course, with thick hemp walls and a green roof.

The story

Rebuilding the Soil with Compost

In 1997, Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired Château Maris in Félines-Minervois. Eden soon found that the previous owner had double-dosed the vines with pesticide, leaving much of the soil without life. Eden answered with compost on a scale measured by the hectare: each hectare received 20 tons of fertiliser made from twice that amount of manure. The work began a long recovery of the ground. More than 25 years later, the vineyard remains 100% chemical-free. Ecocert certification arrived in 2002, Biodyvin in 2004 and Demeter in 2008, and Château Maris became the first vineyard in AOC Minervois La Livinière to be fully certified biodynamic.

At A Glance

Château Maris is a 45-hectare family wine estate at 7 rue de l'Occitanie, 34210 Félines-Minervois, within AOC Minervois La Livinière. Its vineyards centre on Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, with more than 25 years of chemical-free farming, biodynamic certification and a cellar built with thick hemp walls and a green roof.

The Producer

Château Maris began in 1997, when Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired a vineyard whose soil had been heavily damaged by pesticide use. Eden, a British-born pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Languedoc, responded with a large composting programme. Parker remains co-proprietor and is also CEO of Sustainable Insight Capital Management.

The estate's wines come from Mediterranean red grapes, led by Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. That grape palette gives Château Maris a clear regional centre, while the range also includes Natural Selection, an orange wine made from Muscat. Farming, building and bottle style all sit inside the same long shift away from chemically managed land.

Place

Félines-Minervois is the village address, while Minervois La Livinière is the AOC appellation that frames the estate's wines. The distinction matters on the label: one names the local place, the other names the regulated wine area. Château Maris farms 32 hectares in small plots among natural areas, following well-exposed hillsides. The remaining land within the 45-hectare estate gives the vines a setting that includes uncultivated ground as well as vineyard rows.

Soil And Site

The estate's soil story starts with damage. When Eden took over, excessive pesticide use had removed much of the life from the soil. He applied 20 tons of fertiliser per hectare, made from twice that amount of manure, to rebuild the ground through intensive composting.

This work is the physical background to the estate's long chemical-free record. The vineyard has remained 100% chemical-free for more than 25 years, while the surrounding natural areas remain part of the farm's layout. Hillside exposure and small plots define the farming scale, with each parcel sitting inside a wider living landscape.

Story

The estate's arc moves through a sequence of practical commitments. After the 1997 acquisition and soil recovery, Ecocert certification arrived in 2002, Biodyvin in 2004 and Demeter in 2008. Château Maris became the first vineyard in AOC Minervois La Livinière to achieve full biodynamic certification.

In 2012, the same environmental direction reached the cellar. The winery was built with thick hemp walls and covered by a green roof, turning the production building itself into part of the estate's working philosophy. The bottle range therefore sits within a story of changed land, formal farming standards and deliberately low-impact construction.

Vineyards And Cellar

The vineyard combines Mediterranean grapes with a farming system that has stayed chemical-free for more than two decades. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan form the red-wine core, giving the estate access to dark fruit, spice and warm-climate weight without reducing the range to a single grape variety.

The cellar's hemp walls and green roof are practical physical choices, not decorative details. They make the building part of the same environmental programme as the vineyard. In the range, that approach appears beside a different kind of cellar decision: Natural Selection is bottled as an unfined, unfiltered Muscat orange wine in recycled glass.

Wines

La Touge is the clearest red reference. It shows a medium purple colour and an aroma profile built around jammy blackberry, bramble and blueberry, with black cherry, vanilla, cedar and chocolate adding darker, sweeter and wood-spice notes. The wine sits inside the estate's Syrah, Grenache and Carignan landscape, though its precise blend is not fixed here.

Natural Selection occupies a separate place in the range. It is a Muscat orange wine, unfined and unfiltered, bottled in recycled glass. Muscat brings an aromatic grape character, while the orange-wine format moves the colour and mouthfeel away from the deep purple, dark-fruited register of La Touge. These two bottles show the range's breadth: Mediterranean red wine at one end, skin-contact white grape at the other.

In The Glass

La Touge begins visually with medium purple. The first aromas rise as jammy blackberry and bramble, followed by blueberry and black cherry. Vanilla, cedar and chocolate add a darker, more developed layer around the fruit. The palate carries the same black-fruited direction, with acidity, body and tannin giving the wine its movement through the mouth before the fruit and savoury wood-spice notes return on the finish.

Natural Selection changes the sequence immediately. Muscat brings aromatic lift, while the orange-wine style deepens the colour and gives the palate a firmer, more textured feel than a clear, lightly handled white. Unfined and unfiltered bottling keeps the wine's physical feel direct. Recycled glass completes a bottle choice that matches the estate's environmental construction and farming decisions.

A Bottle To Understand It

Start with La Touge. It is Château Maris's most direct red-wine reference, and its medium purple colour, jammy blackberry, bramble, blueberry, black cherry, vanilla, cedar and chocolate aromas make the estate's Mediterranean direction immediately legible. Acidity, body and tannin carry the wine beyond a simple fruit profile, giving the dark flavours shape through the mouth and into the finish.

Natural Selection is a useful second step because it shows how far the range can move, but La Touge gives the clearest first encounter with the estate's red grapes, hillside plots and long chemical-free farming history.

Anecdote

In 1997, Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired Château Maris in Félines-Minervois. Eden soon found that the previous owner had double-dosed the vines with pesticide, leaving the soil stripped of life. His response was measured in lorry loads rather than slogans: each hectare received 20 tons of fertiliser made from twice that amount of manure. The composting programme began the work of rebuilding the vineyard, and the farm remained 100% chemical-free for more than 25 years. Ecocert certification followed in 2002, Biodyvin in 2004 and Demeter in 2008. Château Maris later became the first vineyard in AOC Minervois La Livinière to be fully certified biodynamic.

Final Word

Château Maris offers a clear connection between damaged soil, biodynamic farming, Mediterranean grapes and environmentally designed winemaking. La Touge is the place to begin: a dark-fruited red with a distinctive aromatic profile, grounded in the estate's long work among the hillsides of Félines-Minervois.
