In 1947, the harvest across Pomerol arrived after a summer of sustained, extreme heat. Fermentation at Château Lafleur was difficult to control — the musts were so dense with sugar that the yeasts exhausted themselves before the job was done, and the wine was bottled carrying residual sweetness. When bottles from that year were opened by collectors decades later, the wine was still alive: dark and concentrated, with the sweetness absorbed into the texture rather than sitting on the surface as a separate element. The 1947 Château Lafleur came to be considered one of the most extraordinary bottles ever produced on the Pomerol plateau.
