The story

The Tower Stays, the Wine Is Rebuilt

When Bernard Magrez completed the purchase of La Tour Carnet in 1999, the fourteenth-century tower was the most physically imposing element on the estate — more so than the chai, the equipment, or the existing vine stock. Much of the vineyard was ageing past useful production, planted at densities spreading each vine's energy too broadly and producing dilute fruit. Magrez ordered a parcel audit and began replanting a substantial portion of the estate's acreage, raising vine density in the new plantings so that each vine produced less and concentrated what it did produce. He also commissioned a new temperature-controlled fermentation chai to be built directly alongside the tower. The tower's image on the label remained unchanged throughout — while, vintage by vintage, the wine being made in its shadow was rebuilt from the rootstocks.
