The story

The Condition in the Will

When Daniel Iffla drew up his will, he had already distributed a considerable fortune across France — hospitals, orphanages, and synagogues bore his money. La Tour Blanche was his final significant act: he left the estate to the French state on one condition, that it operate as an agricultural school for viticulture and oenology. The Ministry of Agriculture accepted around 1910, and the estate absorbed an institutional character no other classified Bordeaux growth shares — harvests tied partly to curriculum calendars, students working in the cellar alongside permanent staff. Decades later, when the estate introduced a dry white wine, it put Iffla's preferred name on the label. Every bottle of the dry white produced at La Tour Blanche since then carries the word Osiris.
