The story
The Name That Stayed
When Robert Wilmers agreed to buy Haut-Bailly in 1998, the Sanders family had just lost Daniel Sanders, the man who had run the estate for over four decades. Wilmers was an American banker with no prior winemaking background, and the concern among those watching the sale was predictable: new money, new priorities, old continuity lost. His first significant decision was to ask Véronique Sanders — Daniel's granddaughter, who had grown up with the estate — to stay on as the person in charge of running it. She agreed. The name Wilmers paid for the estate; the name Sanders remained on the office door. Twenty-five years later, that arrangement still holds.

The Producer

Wines

The wines age for eighteen months in oak barrels, many of them new. Oak allows gradual oxygen exposure and can add spice while tannins soften. In good vintages, the wines need 10 to 15 years before approachability, with peak maturity between 15 and 40 years after the vintage.
