The story
Built Twice: The 1962 Rebuild
When the Rothschilds of Lafite acquired Duhart-Milon in 1962, they found diseased vine stocks and a vineyard in no condition to produce wine worthy of a fourth-growth classification. The decision to replant the majority of the estate meant accepting two decades of thin, young-vine wine before the newly planted Cabernet Sauvignon could develop the root depth and concentration that northern Pauillac gravel produces in mature vines. Vineyard after vineyard was torn up and put back in. The earliest Rothschild vintages were unremarkable by Pauillac standards — not because the site was wrong, but because newly planted roots on deep gravel simply had not yet reached what lies below. As the replanted parcels aged through the 1980s and into the 1990s, the wine gradually arrived at the character the plateau had always been capable of producing: dense black fruit, closely woven tannin, and a dry, mineral finish that needs time in the bottle to fully open.
