When the Bordeaux brokers assembled their classification in time for the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle, the commune of Arsac sat at the western fringe of the Margaux plateau — separated from the main gravel ridge by lower-lying ground. Most of what made the appellation famous was concentrated in other communes. But Arsac had an exception: a low knoll of deep Günzian gravel that rose above the surrounding clay plain, and the wine produced from its vines had traded at prices consistent with the other classified growths for decades. The brokers placed Château du Tertre among them, fifth in the Margaux hierarchy. The French word for that feature — tertre, a small hillock or knoll — had been the estate's name for generations, and the feature that named it had become the direct argument for its ranking.
