The 1855 Classification had always been understood as a judgment of wine quality at a particular moment — it assessed what estates were producing in the mid-nineteenth century, not what they might produce in perpetuity. When Forner began clearing the Camensac vineyards in 1964, pulling rows that had not been properly farmed in years and preparing the ground for replanting, he was betting that the classification's bureaucratic permanence was real. The vines that had originally earned the 5th Growth designation came out of the ground. New rootstock went in. For the better part of a decade the estate held a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé certificate while producing no wine at all from the parcels that had justified that classification in the first place. When the first serious vintages from the replanted vines reached the market in the early 1970s, the label still read 5th Growth — printed above grapes that were, at the time, roughly ten years old.
