Notable facts

The story

Champagne for Ariane Launches

One of Champagne J-M Gremillet's oldest importers supplies the house's Champagne for every Ariane rocket launch. Ariane is a rocket program, so the arrangement repeats across the launches. The importer handles the supply for each event, while Gremillet remains the producer named on the bottles. The relationship sits alongside the house's diplomatic reach, which also includes service to embassies and consulates. The destination is specific and recurring: an Ariane launch, supplied through a long standing importer relationship, with Gremillet Champagne attached to every launch in the program.

The Producer

Jean-Christophe Gremillet serves as cellar master for Champagne J-M Gremillet, a Champagne house based in Balnot-sur-Laignes in the Côte des Bar. Anne and Jean-Christophe Gremillet are the second generation at the helm of the current operation.

The house pursues Champagne that is fresh and easy to drink. Its cuvées use Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with the range moving from Extra Brut and Brut bottlings to organic and vintage wines.

Place

Balnot-sur-Laignes is the home village, in the Côte des Bar, the broader Champagne territory attached to the house. The place is paired with Pinot Noir led bottlings. Pinot Noir is the largest grape in both Tradition Extra Brut and Cuvée Biologique Brut, while Millésime Brut is described through ripe Pinot fruit.

Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier remain part of the detailed blends, so the range carries three Champagne grape varieties across its principal cuvées.

Story

Jean-Michel Gremillet inherited a small vineyard from his mother, Lulu, in 1979 and turned that inheritance into a much larger vineyard operation. His children Anne and Jean-Christophe Gremillet now stand at the helm, with Jean-Christophe serving as cellar master.

The current house therefore combines a maternal vineyard inheritance with second generation leadership and a named cellar role. That family succession continues through the wines made under the Gremillet name.

Vineyards And Cellar

Vineyard management carries HVE 3 certification with restricted chemical use. The house's cuvées without a vintage date, including Tradition Extra Brut and Cuvée Biologique Brut, spend 24 months on lees, compared with the required 15 months. Vintage cuvées mature for a minimum of five years, compared with the required three.

Lees ageing keeps the wine in contact with yeast after the second fermentation. This can soften the mousse and add bread and biscuit aromas, while longer ageing allows more time for the wine to develop before release.

Wines

Tradition Extra Brut is Pinot Noir led, with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Cuvée Biologique Brut uses the same three grape varieties in different proportions and carries the organic designation.

Cuvée Prestige Brut is another Brut bottling. Millésime Brut 2015 and Clos Rocher Brut 2013 are the vintage dated wines in the range. The bottle names separate the wines by dosage category, organic farming line and vintage date.

In The Glass

Tradition Extra Brut opens with green apple, mineral, white bread and citrus. The palate brings green apple, pear, citrus, stone fruit, light bread, grapefruit and mineral, with a very dry finish and balanced acidity.

Cuvée Biologique Brut shows red apple, tropical citrus, mango and mineral on the nose. It is dry and fresh, with mature red apple, lime, tropical fruit, grapefruit, light bread and mineral across the palate.

Millésime Brut combines ripe Pinot fruit with baked biscuit, then carries gentle ripe fruit through a complex palate and a long fresh finish. Blanc de Blancs shows lemon peel and lime zest with a frank mineral driven finish, while Selection Brut brings almond skin, citrus, strong acidity and a fine mousse.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Gremillet Tradition Extra Brut. Its composition is 50% Pinot Noir, 10% Pinot Meunier and 40% Chardonnay, putting all three named grapes into one cuvée with Pinot Noir in the lead.

The organic cuvée changes the proportions, while Millésime Brut and Clos Rocher Brut carry vintage dates. Tradition Extra Brut keeps the first bottle focused on the house's three grape varieties and its Extra Brut dosage category.

Anecdote

One of Champagne J-M Gremillet's oldest importers supplies the house's Champagne for every Ariane rocket launch. Ariane is a rocket program, so the arrangement repeats across a series of launches rather than belonging to one isolated event. The importer handles the supply for each launch, while Gremillet remains the producer named on the bottles. The relationship sits alongside the house's diplomatic reach, which also includes service to embassies and consulates. Its most specific destination is therefore a rocket launch, supplied through a long standing importer relationship, with Gremillet Champagne attached to every Ariane launch in the program.

Final Word

Champagne J-M Gremillet pairs its Balnot-sur-Laignes base and Pinot Noir led cuvées with HVE 3 farming and extended cellar ageing, while keeping its Champagne fresh and easy to drink.
