The story

Etienne Takes Control in 2010

In 2010, at age 26, Etienne Calsac decided to take control of his grandparents' three hectares, with vineyards scattered in and around Avize. Those parcels had previously been rented to major Champagne houses. Etienne had been born and raised in Reims to parents who did not make wine, then received formal viticultural training and gained experience in California, Canada and New Zealand. After the takeover, his work centred on terroir expression, with each parcel vinified separately.

The Producer

Champagne Etienne Calsac is a Champagne producer working in and around Avize. The range centres on Chardonnay, supplemented by heritage grape varieties, and includes L'Échappée Belle, a blanc de blancs Extra Brut cuvée. Blanc de blancs identifies Champagne made from white grapes, while Extra Brut marks a dry style.

The producer's range is defined by mineral driven Champagnes. L'Échappée Belle is made to highlight how Chardonnay translates limestone and clay and limestone soils, placing grape and ground together in one bottle.

Place

The vineyards are scattered in and around Avize, a Champagne place where Chardonnay sits at the centre of Etienne Calsac's work. Heritage varieties supplement it, giving the range more than one grape voice while keeping Chardonnay as its main thread.

Avize is therefore present through both geography and grape choice. The local holdings provide the setting for cuvées that move from Chardonnay focused blanc de blancs to wines with a broader Grande Vallée profile.

Soil And Site

Limestone and clay and limestone soils are the ground named for L'Échappée Belle. The cuvée is made to show how Chardonnay translates those soils, so the soil reference reaches the bottle through the grape and its blanc de blancs style.

Story

Etienne was born and raised in Reims to parents who did not make wine. He received formal viticultural training and gained experience in California, Canada and New Zealand before developing his own work in Champagne.

Etienne's winemaking philosophy prioritizes terroir expression. The domaine achieved organic certification in 2020, adding a formal farming status to a producer whose stated approach begins with the vineyard.

Vineyards And Cellar

The domaine holds 3 hectares of vineyard. Each parcel is vinified separately, keeping the cellar work organised by individual holding.

A small percentage of wines is aged in barrels. Barrel ageing can add texture and gentle oxygen exposure, while the selective use keeps the treatment limited to part of the range.

Wines

The range centres on Chardonnay and includes heritage varieties. L'Échappée Belle is a blanc de blancs Extra Brut made to highlight limestone and clay and limestone soils.

Les Rocheforts carries a different emphasis. It shows the body of the Grande Vallée while retaining a taut, racy palate. The cuvées therefore move between a soil focused Chardonnay expression and a fuller wine shaped by the Grande Vallée.

In The Glass

L'Échappée Belle opens with yellow apple, fresh grass and mineral notes. On the palate it brings tart lemon, crisp apple and ripe pear, followed by brioche and a long finish.

Les Rocheforts shows more body, while its taut, racy palate keeps the wine moving through the finish. Across the range, mineral notes and Chardonnay fruit sit alongside differences in breadth and palate weight.

A Bottle To Understand It

Put L'Échappée Belle Extra Brut first. Blanc de blancs identifies the cuvée as a Champagne made from white grapes, and its Chardonnay focus is tied directly to limestone and clay and limestone soils. Extra Brut marks a dry style. The bottle places the grape, soil pairing and label category together without adding another grape or site to the frame.
