The Producer
Champagne Dourdon Vieillard is a family vineyard house in Reuil, working clay limestone parcels spread between rivers and plateaux. Meunier has a central place in the range, appearing as a blanc de noirs, in an oak matured cuvée, and alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The house works across several Champagne formats. Instant Meunier focuses on one grape, Instant Boisé adds oak maturation, and Le Rituel de Fernand combines three varieties.
Place
Reuil is the home village of Champagne Dourdon Vieillard. Its vineyard parcels extend between rivers and plateaux, placing the vines across a varied landscape within the village's clay limestone setting.
Clay can hold water through dry periods, while limestone drains freely and contributes a chalk marked feel to wine. In Champagne, that combination can support ripening without leaving the palate soft or heavy.
Soil And Site
The estate's parcels sit on clay limestone ground. Clay supplies moisture holding capacity, while limestone provides drainage and a firm mineral impression. These physical differences help explain the freshness that runs through the wines and the house's choice to work several grape varieties across the same broad landscape.
Story
In 2005, Fabienne Dourdon Vieillard left the Eiffel Tower after a decade in marketing and took over leadership of the family vineyard. She brought a modern business sensibility from the Eiffel Tower into a house that farms its own parcels and makes Champagne in both modern and chalk cut cellars.
Fabienne's arrival placed a named person at the centre of the house's current phase. The wines now include a Meunier blanc de noirs, an oak matured Meunier cuvée, and a blend of Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Vineyards And Cellar
The estate farms about 10 hectares of vineyards. Its cellar facilities include a modern cellar and an ancient cellar cut into chalk, with a press house and fermenting room alongside them.
Instant Boisé is vinified in oak barrels, and malolactic fermentation is blocked. Oak can contribute spice and a rounder texture, while stopping malolactic fermentation preserves more of the wine's natural malic acidity.
Instant Meunier undergoes no malolactic fermentation. Its dosage is 7g/l, and it spends at least three years ageing in the cellars. Extended ageing before release allows the bubbles to soften and the wine to develop a more integrated texture.
Wines
The named cuvées divide the range by grape and cellar treatment. Instant Meunier is the single grape blanc de noirs cuvée. Instant Boisé gives Meunier an oak matured expression. Le Rituel de Fernand is the broader blend, combining Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
A blanc de noirs is white Champagne made from black grapes. The category keeps the grape at the centre of the wine while preserving the pale colour associated with Champagne. The three cuvées therefore move from a single grape style to oak influenced Meunier and then to a blend with wider grape composition.
In The Glass
Instant Meunier is fruity and vibrant, with pear, apricot, candied lemon and spice. Its mouthfeel is melting, and the finish carries pronounced freshness.
Instant Boisé shows a pale gold colour and fine bubbles. White flowers and yellow fruits rise first, followed by cooked apple, spice, vanilla and almond. The palate combines pronounced freshness with balanced acidity, pear, apricot and candied lemon, ending with spice.
Le Rituel de Fernand has a light colour and lively bubbles. Green notes and herbs lead into white fruit, while the palate keeps a fresh feel with white fruit at the centre.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Instant Meunier first. It is a blanc de noirs made entirely from Meunier, without malolactic fermentation, with 7g/l dosage and at least three years of cellar ageing.
The bottle keeps the grape, the fermentation choice, the dosage and the ageing period in one place. Instant Boisé adds oak, while Le Rituel de Fernand widens the composition to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Anecdote
In 1958, the family began commercializing its champagne after generations of vine cultivation dating to 1812. The two stages remain distinct in the house history. Family members had worked the vines for generations before the operation began commercial production under its own name. The present estate still joins old and new facilities, with a modern cellar standing alongside an ancient cellar cut into chalk.
Final Word
Champagne Dourdon Vieillard is a Reuil family house built around clay limestone parcels, Meunier led wines, and cellar work that ranges from chalk cut rooms to oak maturation.
