Celler Josep Ventosa SL

Baix Penedès family producer making certified-organic traditional-method Cava from Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada. Vineyards at 90 to 150 metres on chalky limestone and sand. Aged twelve months on lees, blended after blind tasting.

The producer

The Ventosa-Mañé family has been working in Cava and bottled Penedès wine since 1941, but the name on every bottle points to a more specific moment. In 1952, the family planted its first vineyard on the estate in Baix Penedès, and that act of planting became the brand's defining marker. The range is called Josep 1952, and the oldest vines on the estate supply the fruit for the flagship Brut Organic, a certified-organic traditional-method Cava from 50% Xarel·lo, 30% Macabeu, and 20% Parellada.

The estate sits between the sea and the mountains at 90 to 150 metres above sea level on chalky limestone and sand. Indigenous-yeast fermentation, blind tasting of each component cuvée before the final blend is assembled, and twelve months on lees give the wine more textural weight than entry-level Cava while keeping it in the dry, mineral, food-ready register. Xarel·lo dominates the blend and shapes the wine toward herbal lift and a firm, faintly saline finish.

Notable facts

The story

The Year They Planted

The Ventosa-Mañé family had been buying and selling grapes and wine in the Penedès since 1941, working inside the Cava industry as it grew around them. They knew the region's vineyards, its trading rhythms, and its production calendar. What they did not have was land of their own. Eleven years passed before that changed. In 1952, the family planted their first vines on the estate in Baix Penedès, moving from participants in someone else's crop to owners of their own. The parcel they planted that year is still in production. When the family later built a brand around this history, they did not reach for a founder's name or a classification date. They took 1952, the year of first planting, and put it on the label. The date has appeared on every bottle since, and the oldest vines in the blend still trace back to that first-planted ground.
