Cave Mont Blanc de Morgex et La Salle works the highest commercial vineyards in Europe. Its cellars sit at La Ruine in Morgex, and its vineyards occupy the terraced left bank of the Dora Baltea river across the municipalities of Morgex and La Salle, in the Valdigne, the uppermost wine-growing zone of Valle d'Aosta. Everything produced here is white, still or sparkling, and every bottle comes from one grape: Prié Blanc, specifically the Blanc de Morgex biotype.

The cooperative was constituted in 1983, succeeding a growers' association that the Morgex parish priest Don Bougeat had helped sustain through the lean post-war decades. From that foundation the cooperative grew its membership to about 80 growers and its production to around 140,000 bottles a year. It ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, racks without clarification or stabilization, and bottles to order for the still wines. Glacier is a traditional-method Pas Dosé sparkling wine aged 30 months on the lees. One cuvée matures in former magnetite mine tunnels at 1,800 metres in Cogne.

In 2003, Cave Mont Blanc began fermenting Prié Blanc above 2,000 metres, working with mountain guides on an experimental parcel on Mont Blanc's upper slopes. The project had no building, no permanent infrastructure, and no guarantee it would continue past a single vintage. It continued for twelve years. Then in 2015 the cooperative formalised the work with a partnership with Sky Way Monte Bianco, the cable-car company that runs to the mountain's high stations. A small winery was installed at Pavillon du Mont Fréty, 2,173 metres above sea level. The harvest arrives by cable car. The fermentation tanks sit inside a mountain station built for skiers and climbers. The grapes go up in one direction; the wine comes down in the other. The cooperative was constituted in 1983, succeeding the Association des Viticulteurs, a growers' association whose formation was encouraged in part by Don Bougeat, the parish priest of Morgex until 1971. From that growers' movement the cooperative grew, expanded its membership through its first decade, and eventually pushed its vinification work higher than anyone had gone before, running fermentation experiments above 2,000 metres with local mountain guides from 2003 onward. By 2015 the cooperative had formalised that work with a permanent winery at 2,173 metres.

Place

The Dora Baltea river runs down from the Mont Blanc massif through Valle d'Aosta toward Piedmont. In the Valdigne, its uppermost reach, the valley walls are steep and the climate is cold, dry, and continental. The vineyards of Morgex and La Salle occupy the orographic left bank, climbing in terraced steps to 1,200 metres. That altitude matters in a specific, practical way: phylloxera, the root louse that forced most of Europe's vineyards onto grafted American rootstocks after the 1870s, cannot survive here. The Valdigne sits above the louse's viable range.

The consequence is that every vine in the Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle denomination grows on its own European roots. The denomination name itself contains both place names: Morgex and La Salle are not just the postal addresses of the growers but the legal boundaries of a DOC built around a single grape at a single extreme altitude. Above these terraces, commercial viticulture in Italy stops.

Soil And Site

The terraced vineyards rise from the valley floor in a series of narrow stepped parcels cut into the mountain slopes. The soils are glacial in origin: stony, low in organic matter, and free-draining. The combination of thin soils, altitude, and the Valdigne's notably low annual rainfall keeps vine vigour in check without irrigation. The dry mountain air reduces fungal disease pressure to a level well below what growers experience in the lowland wine regions of Piedmont or Tuscany, so treatments are infrequent. The low pergola training, with vines kept close to the ground and supported on wooden or monolithic stone posts, is a direct response to winter frost and wind: the canopy shelters beneath the angle of the slope and the posts hold it steady through the cold months.

Story

Viticulture in the Valdigne survived the twentieth century by a narrow margin. Mountain terraces are expensive to maintain and difficult to mechanise, and the grape here, Prié Blanc, had no commercial profile outside the valley. Don Bougeat, the Morgex parish priest who retired in 1971, spent years encouraging the local growers to organise collectively, and the Association des Viticulteurs that emerged from his advocacy kept the vineyards in production through the difficult decades when the economics of Alpine farming pushed growers toward other livelihoods.

The 1983 cooperative was the formal successor to that association, built with support from the Valle d'Aosta regional administration. Membership grew through the 1980s and 1990s as the cooperative stabilised income for growers who might otherwise have abandoned the terraces. The production expanded toward 140,000 bottles per year. Then, in 2003, the cooperative began fermenting Prié Blanc above 2,000 metres, working with mountain guides on an experimental parcel on the upper slopes. That experiment did not end at 2,000 metres. It ended, for now, at a cable car station on the flank of Mont Blanc.

Vineyards And Cellar

Prié Blanc in the Valdigne is propagated by layering. A shoot from the mother plant is buried in spring while still attached, and severed the following season once it has developed its own roots. The practice is ancient and slow. It means the cooperative's vineyards are planted with vines that trace their rootstock back through local generations, without grafting onto American material.

For still wines, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts under temperature control. The wine is racked without clarification or stabilization and bottled to order, so each batch arrives fresh rather than sitting in inventory with fining or sterile filtration applied. For Glacier, the traditional-method sparkling wine, the first fermentation uses both large Alpine larch-oak vessels and stainless steel tanks before the wine goes into bottle for its second fermentation. It then ages on the lees for 30 months before disgorgement. No dosage liqueur is added at disgorgement: Glacier is released as Pas Dosé, completely dry.

One cuvée follows a different path entirely. After an initial period in stainless steel, the wine is bottled and transported to former magnetite mine tunnels at Costa del Pino in Cogne, 1,800 metres above sea level. The mine's constant darkness, temperature, and humidity take over the maturation from there.

Wines

The cooperative's range is narrow by design: the denomination permits only Prié Blanc, and the cooperative makes only Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle in its still and sparkling forms.

The still Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle is the foundation. Fermented in steel with indigenous yeasts and bottled without fining or stabilization, it is light-bodied, pale straw in colour, and keyed to freshness rather than weight. The absence of clarification and the bottled-to-order approach mean the wine arrives with the kind of live texture that processing would strip away. Acidity is high, fruit is clean and unadorned, and the finish is short and mineral. At this altitude and with this grape, concentration is not the point: the wine is a precise record of a cold growing season.

Glacier is the cooperative's most developed label. It is a traditional-method Pas Dosé sparkling wine made entirely from ungrafted Prié Blanc grown between 900 and 1,200 metres. First fermentation in larch-oak vessels and steel tanks adds a mild breadth to the base wine before bottle refermentation and 30 months on the lees build in a biscuity depth and persistent fine mousse. With no dosage added at disgorgement, the wine finishes bone dry, with acidity that cuts clean through the mousse and a mineral thread on the close.

The mine-matured cuvée, aged in the Cogne tunnels at 1,800 metres, develops in a different direction: constant cool darkness extends the maturation without any added complexity from oak, and it is a still wine with greater mid-palate weight and a denser, longer finish than the standard bottled-to-order release.

In The Glass

The still Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle opens with green apple, white flowers, and a faint citrus note. On the palate, the acidity is the first thing: firm, clean, and immediate, with a lean mid-palate that carries light stone-fruit and herb before the finish narrows to a stony mineral note. There is very little body and no perceptible oak. The wine does not expand in the glass; it stays precise and cool.

Glacier rises differently. The fine persistent bubbles carry the aroma upward: green apple is still there, but the 30 months on the lees add a biscuit note and a faint toasty quality that the still wine does not have. In the mouth, the mousse integrates with the acidity and the Pas Dosé finish is completely dry, with a flinty close that lingers longer than the fruit. High altitude, ungrafted Prié Blanc, no dosage: the dryness is absolute and the minerality is the wine's last word.
