The story

The Name the Nuns Left Behind

The Carmelite nuns who tended the vineyard on the Grèves slope above Beaune called their wine Enfant Jésus — a name they attached not out of marketing but out of conviction about what the parcel produced. When the National Assembly passed its legislation on Church property in 1791, the plot was classified as a bien national and put up for public auction alongside the convent's other land. Bouchard Père & Fils acquired the 3.83-hectare parcel in the early nineteenth century and kept the name exactly as the nuns had left it. No cellar renovation, no label redesign, no change of ownership across more than two centuries has altered it: every bottle released today still carries the same four words the Carmelite sisters put on their wine.
