Born Rosé Barcelona

Organic rosé producer from Barcelona, farming Grenache Noir, Tempranillo, and Pinot Noir in the Penedès DO between the Mediterranean coast and the Montserrat mountains. Makes still and sparkling rosé only.

The producer

Jana Robles launched Born Rosé Barcelona in early 2019 alongside a women-led team of Catalan entrepreneurs. The brief was specific: organic rosé only, alcohol kept low, fruit sourced from the Penedès, the large Catalan DO that begins south of Barcelona and climbs inland toward the Montserrat massif. Penedès is known for white wine and Cava. A project devoted entirely to pale, dry rosé is an unusual specialisation within it.

The range runs to three confirmed bottles. The core still rosé blends Grenache Noir and Tempranillo at 12% alcohol, certified organic, and made without oak. The 503 BR adds cold maceration and eight months of partial barrel ageing in French and American oak, building more weight and a faint spice note into the mid-palate. The Born Rosé Brut is 100% Pinot Noir made by double fermentation. At the 2023 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles rosé session, the Brut was one of only two sparkling rosés, from a field of more than 2,000 wines, to receive a Grand Gold Medal.

The story

Two Sparkling Rosés from 2,000 Wines

In Montpellier, on the morning of March 9, 2023, the judges at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles rosé session were working through the final rounds of a tasting that had covered more than 2,000 wines over three days. The competition awards Grand Gold Medals to wines that score above a threshold across the full judging panel; in that session, 14 wines reached it. Only two of those 14 were sparkling rosés. Born Rosé Brut was one of them. The team in Barcelona had been making wine for four years at that point, in a Catalan DO where sparkling wine meant Cava and rosé was rarely the headline. The distinction was not a category gold but the top tier in a session built exclusively around rosé.

The Producer

Jana Robles grew up in Barcelona and launched Born Rosé Barcelona in early 2019 alongside a women-led team of Catalan entrepreneurs. The project had a specific brief from the outset: make organic rosé only, keep the alcohol low, and source from the Penedès, the large Catalan DO that begins south of Barcelona and climbs inland toward the Montserrat massif. That narrowness is deliberate. Penedès is known primarily for white wine and Cava; a project devoted entirely to pale, dry rosé is an unusual specialisation within it.

Within seven years, Born Rosé Barcelona had reached 25 countries across four continents. The Monarq Group came on as exclusive distributor for Latin America, the Caribbean, and US duty-free in February 2022. The competition record includes 8 gold and 6 silver medals at international tastings, with the highest single result coming from the Born Rosé Brut at the 2023 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles rosé session, where it was one of only two sparkling rosés to receive a Grand Gold Medal from a field of more than 2,000 wines.

Place

Penedès sits between the Mediterranean coast and the pre-Pyrenean ridgeline, roughly forty kilometres south and west of Barcelona. The DO is large and altitude-stratified: the lower coastal zone is warm and Mediterranean-stabilised, and temperatures grow progressively cooler as the land rises toward the interior. Those altitude changes produce noticeably different microclimates within the same appellation, which allows a range producer to draw on cooler-grown fruit without leaving the DO.

For rosé, the lower and middle zones of Penedès provide the regulated warmth that Grenache Noir needs to ripen fully while keeping acidity intact. The Montserrat massif to the north acts as a physical frame for the inland vineyards and moderates the hottest summer temperatures. The Penedès provides a growing environment that favours the pale, dry style: enough sun for fruit ripeness, enough altitude and maritime influence to hold freshness through harvest.

Soil And Site

The Penedès sits on a limestone and clay base across most of its extent. The lower zones include alluvial and sandy soils closer to the coast, which tend to give lighter, more aromatic wines, while the middle and upper zones return to harder limestone, which pushes acidity and reduces yields. Born Rosé Barcelona works within this geography but the specific parcels or villages supplying the fruit are not disclosed. What the cellar records confirm is that the farming is certified organic across the full range.

Story

The project began not from a winemaking family or an inherited estate but from a decision to build a rosé brand around a place and a style. Jana Robles and her Barcelona team identified Penedès as the source: close enough to the city for hands-on management, climatically suited to the pale and dry profile they wanted, and underused as a rosé denomination compared to its dominance in white wine and sparkling.

Organic certification was built into the model from the beginning rather than added later. The low-alcohol positioning, with the core still rosé confirmed at 12%, followed from the grape choices and the farming approach. Grenache Noir gives colour and fruit without excessive weight; Tempranillo adds body and a mild tannic lift. For the sparkling Brut, the team switched to Pinot Noir, the grape best suited to double-fermentation sparkling production, and developed that wine as a separate tier. The 503 BR came after, taking the still rosé concept into partial barrel ageing territory and repositioning the range.

By 2022, distribution covered multiple continents and the label had developed enough international visibility to attract a major Latin American distributor. The pace of that expansion suggests the original brief was well-matched to a market moment: pale, dry, low-alcohol organic rosé from a recognisable Spanish wine region.

Vineyards And Cellar

All Born Rosé Barcelona wines are farmed organically. The Grenache Noir and Tempranillo parcels in Penedès supply the still range; the Pinot Noir parcels supply the Brut.

For the core still rosé, the cellar approach is straightforward: gentle handling to preserve the pale colour, controlled fermentation temperatures to lock in floral and fruit character, and early bottling to keep freshness. The confirmed tasting profile from the core wine runs to white flowers, tropical fruit, and a clean finish at 12% alcohol.

The 503 BR uses cold maceration, meaning the grape skins remain in contact with the must at low temperatures before fermentation begins. That skin contact deepens the extraction slightly, adding mid-palate weight that the core wine avoids. Fermentation is then conducted at controlled temperatures, and 10% of the final blend is aged in French and American oak barrels for eight months. That oak proportion is deliberate: enough to add texture and a faint spice note without pushing the wine into a wood-forward style.

The Born Rosé Brut is made by double fermentation from 100% Pinot Noir. Double fermentation in this context means the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation to build the mousse, the method used for Cava and Champagne production, as distinct from carbonation. Pinot Noir contributes the red fruit character and the palate weight that make sparkling rosé more interesting than sparkling white.

Wines

The range includes three confirmed bottles.

The core Born Rosé Barcelona is the foundational wine: Grenache Noir dominant with a portion of Tempranillo, 12% alcohol, certified organic, and made for immediate drinking. It is pale in colour, dry on the palate, and shows white flowers and tropical fruit on the nose. The acidity is clean without being austere, and the finish is short and fresh.

The 503 BR is the range's most technically involved still wine. Cold maceration and controlled fermentation build more weight into the palate than the core rosé carries, and the eight months of partial barrel ageing in French and American oak add a mild spice note and a slightly rounder texture on the finish. It is positioned as the most food-compatible wine in the still tier.

Born Rosé Brut is made from 100% Pinot Noir by double fermentation. It is a sparkling rosé with a fine mousse, red fruit on the nose, and the structured mid-palate that Pinot Noir provides. The Grand Gold Medal at the 2023 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles confirmed the wine's quality in a rosé-specialist field.

In The Glass

The core Born Rosé Barcelona opens with white flowers and a light tropical register on the nose, closer to lychee and guava than to the darker berry notes that a Grenache Noir grown in warmer conditions might produce. In the mouth the wine is dry, with a clean acid line and low tannin. The palate is light-bodied and finishes quickly, which is the point: this is a wine made for the kind of occasion where you want something pale, cold, and not demanding.

The 503 BR shifts the register noticeably. The cold maceration adds a faint berry depth to the nose, and the partial oak ageing rounds the mid-palate into something with more grip. The spice from the barrel is subtle, a background note rather than a flavour, but it gives the finish more length than the core wine carries.

The Brut brings the Pinot Noir character forward: red fruit, a fine and persistent mousse, and a palate that is more structured than either still wine. The double fermentation method produces a mousse that integrates with the fruit rather than sitting on top of it, and the finish is dry and clean.

A Bottle To Understand It

Start with the Born Rosé Barcelona, the core still rosé. It is Grenache Noir with a portion of Tempranillo, 12% alcohol, organic, and made entirely without oak. The nose is floral and lightly tropical; the palate is dry, fresh, and clean. It is not a complex wine, and it is not trying to be. It shows exactly what the project is built around: pale colour, low alcohol, organic farming, and the Mediterranean freshness that Penedès provides at its best. Once you know what the house does at the foundation, the 503 BR and the Brut make more sense as departures from that base.

Final Word

Born Rosé Barcelona is a focused project: one country, one DO, one colour, three distinct cellar methods. The organic commitment is total, the alcohol is deliberately low, and the range architecture is clear enough to navigate without a map. For a bottle of pale, dry Catalan rosé that traces a straight line from Mediterranean vineyard to glass, the core Born Rosé Barcelona delivers exactly what it promises.
