In 2003, Viña Cartín needed a new home. The bodega had outgrown its original facility and faced a choice familiar to growing producers: build something new or find something old worth keeping. The team chose a historic stone winery in Lantaño, a building that had stood through the years when Rías Baixas was still establishing itself as a formal appellation. Rather than replace it, they refurbished the stone shell with care, fitting modern stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled equipment inside walls that had housed winemaking long before the D.O. existed. That building is where every bottle in the current range is made today.

In 2003 the bodega moved into a renovated historic stone winery in Lantaño, choosing to refurbish an existing building rather than construct a new facility. The decision preserved the building's traditional character while installing modern cellar equipment inside. That building, and the five-label range it produces, represents the bodega today.

Place

Val do Salnés sits at the western edge of Rías Baixas, where the ría de Arousa opens toward the Atlantic. Of the five recognised subzones in the D.O., this is the coolest and the most directly exposed to Atlantic sea breezes. Those breezes slow the ripening of Albariño through the growing season, which is why the grapes carry more aromatic complexity and higher natural acidity here than in the warmer inland subzones. The label consequence is Albariño that reads floral and mineral rather than rich and tropical.

Viña Cartín is the main estate label, 100% Albariño from Val do Salnés. It shows straw yellow in the glass, with a nose of fresh floral aromas, pear, and apple. The palate has good depth and a balanced acid line with a persistent finish. This is the bodega's signature expression of the variety.

Ruta 49 sits at the fresher end of the range. The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel with selected yeasts. On the nose: bright citrus, herbaceous notes, and a faint trace of spice. In the mouth it is crisp and direct, with tight varietal character.

Terras de Lantaño is the parcel-focused label, named after the Lantaño parish where the home plots sit. It occupies a more considered position in the range, with the Terras de Lantaño Añada adding a vintage-dated layer that suggests a selection or extended post-fermentation development.
