The story
Thomas Barton and the Garonne
In 1725, Thomas Barton, an Irishman, settled in Bordeaux to start his company. From the Chartrons area in central Bordeaux, barrels and bottles were loaded onto ships sailing via the Garonne river to numerous countries. The river route carried both barrels and bottles outward from central Bordeaux by ship to foreign destinations. By 2019, Barton & Guestier exported 16 million bottles to 130 countries. The Bordeaux house remains the city's oldest winehouse still active under the Barton & Guestier name.
