The Producer
Balbiano Melchiorre farms 22 hectares in the Collina Torinese zone of the Turin hills and has built its range around one decision: making Freisa di Chieri dry. Most Piedmontese producers treat Freisa as a grape for easy, slightly sweet fizz. Balbiano ages it seriously, produces two distinct superiore expressions from different parcels, and has done so across three generations since Melchiorre Balbiano founded the estate in 1941.
The estate sits in Andezeno, a small town roughly 20 kilometres east of Torino, in the Collina Torinese hills that ring the city to the east and south. The zone is not Barolo or Barbaresco country. Its grape is Freisa, a native Piedmontese variety with a long local history but a reputation that spent decades in decline. Balbiano is one of a handful of estates that kept making it dry and kept taking it seriously.
In 2003, the third generation extended that commitment in an unexpected direction: Luca Balbiano restored the historic vineyard at Villa della Regina, a Savoy royal villa on a hill inside Turin itself. The wine produced there carries a distinction no other Italian producer can claim.
Place
Collina Torinese is the DOC zone that covers the hills encircling Torino, named for the city they surround. The zone is defined by its native red grapes, Freisa foremost among them, with Barbera and Bonarda planted alongside. The hills give moderate elevation, good sun exposure on the slopes, and enough altitude to preserve the acidity that Freisa needs to hold its shape as a dry red.
Freisa di Chieri is the more specific appellation within that zone, centred on the area around Chieri, a hill town south of Turin whose connection to the grape goes back centuries. Under the Freisa di Chieri DOC, the superiore category requires longer aging and produces wines with greater depth and aging potential than the base version. Balbiano's two superiore labels, Barbarossa and Vigna Villa della Regina, both carry that designation.
The Villa della Regina vineyard breaks the usual geography entirely. It lies on a south-facing hillside inside the legal city limits of Turin, at a 16th-century Savoy royal villa. Under Italian wine law, a DOC wine must be grown within a defined geographical zone. Villa della Regina qualifies under Freisa di Chieri DOC while sitting inside a major European capital. No other DOC wine in Italy shares that address.
Soil And Site
The Collina Torinese hills are composed of clay-rich soils with calcareous and sandy components typical of the Piedmontese foothills. These soils retain moisture well and give Freisa a stable base for the slow ripening the grape needs. The hill slopes provide natural drainage and sun exposure that moderate the cooling effect of the Turin plain below.
The Villa della Regina plot occupies a south-facing hillside within the city, elevated enough above the urban fabric to maintain the vine health and ripening conditions the DOC requires. Soil composition there mirrors the broader Collina Torinese character: the same clay and calcareous base, on a slope that the Savoy royal household chose for viticulture centuries before the city grew around it.
Story
Melchiorre Balbiano committed his working life to Freisa di Chieri when he founded the estate in 1941. At that moment, the grape held local standing in the Turin hills, drunk young, often fizzy, rarely taken seriously beyond the zone. The estate survived the war years and the subsequent rural disruption that emptied much of Piedmont's agricultural workforce.
Franco Balbiano trained as a chemist before returning to take over from his father. He modernized the operation, moving to a 19th-century farmhouse, introducing estate-bottled wines, and expanding distribution beyond the immediate region. Franco also took on the presidency of the Freisa di Chieri and Collina Torinese consortium, advocating for the grape at the regional body level during years when its reputation was at its lowest point. The consortium role gave the advocacy institutional weight.
Franco's other project ran alongside the winery work. Over more than 35 years, he assembled two collections that became the Balbiano Museum: more than 2,000 Piedmontese peasant farm tools and more than 1,000 vintage toys from the late 19th century through the 1960s. The museum now forms part of the estate visit, preserving the material culture of the agricultural world the winery still operates within.
Luca Balbiano, the third generation, restored the abandoned vineyard at Villa della Regina in 2003 and began producing wine from it under the Freisa di Chieri DOC. The decision carried the family's eighty-year commitment to the grape into a completely new kind of place.
Vineyards And Cellar
The estate farms 22 hectares across the Collina Torinese hills. The Barbarossa label draws from the oldest estate parcels, where vine age concentrates the fruit and gives the wine its denser mid-palate and capacity to develop over many years. The Villa della Regina vineyard is a separate, discrete plot inside Turin, farmed for the prestige Freisa expression.
Barbera is vinified in stainless steel and released to show its natural character: bright acidity, intense ruby color, and fruit-forward palate without oak overlay. For the Freisa superiore wines, the approach prioritizes aging over early fruit expression: the wines are held longer before release and develop tertiary aromas through that time in bottle.
Wines
Balbiano produces three expressions of Freisa di Chieri and one Collina Torinese Barbera from estate vineyards.
Freisa di Chieri DOC Superiore Barbarossa is the estate's structured dry Freisa, sourced from the oldest vineyard parcels. It opens with fresh fruit aromas that gradually give way to leather and suede. On the palate it is dry and full, with well-defined tannins that are firm without weight, and a long aging arc that develops the wine's facets over years.
Freisa di Chieri DOC Superiore Vigna Villa della Regina is the prestige expression, from the restored Savoy-era vineyard inside Turin. It is a long-aging wine with soft tannins and bright acidity holding it together through development. The nose moves from fruit toward tertiary territory: black pepper, tobacco, leather, and cloves appear as the wine matures. The tannins are softer than Barbarossa, and the acidity provides the backbone for the aging arc.
Freisa di Chieri Frizzante is the traditional sparkling form of the grape, lighter and fresher, maintaining the historical style of the variety in the zone.
Collina Torinese DOC Barbera is made entirely in stainless steel with no oak contact. The wine shows an intense ruby color, ripe red and black fruit on the nose, and a harmonious, full palate with velvety tannins, bright acidity, and persistent finish.
In The Glass
The two superiore Freisas move through similar aromatic sequences but arrive at different weights. Both open with fruit, red cherry and dark berry, before tertiary aromas take over with age: leather, tobacco, and spice emerge as the primary signatures on both, with Barbarossa leaning toward leather and suede and Villa della Regina toward black pepper, tobacco, and cloves.
In the mouth, Barbarossa is the drier and firmer of the two. The tannins are well-defined and grip the mid-palate without becoming hard. Villa della Regina balances soft tannins against bright acidity, giving a gentler but still structured palate with a long finish that shows the grape's capacity for development.
The Collina Torinese Barbera is built on acidity and fruit rather than tannin depth. It delivers an immediate, vivid palate: intense ruby color that carries into a full, harmonious mouth feel, red and black fruit at the core, velvety tannins, and persistent finish. It reads as the freshest wine in the range.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with Vigna Villa della Regina, the Freisa di Chieri DOC Superiore from the restored vineyard inside Turin. It is dry Freisa in its most concentrated form: soft tannins, bright acidity, and a long aromatic development through black pepper, tobacco, leather, and cloves. The fruit does not disappear on the palate but shifts into the background as the spicy, tertiary character comes forward. The acidity keeps it fresh and gives the wine the grip to age. It is sourced from a vineyard no other producer farms, with an address that appears on no other Italian DOC label. That singularity carries through to the glass.
Anecdote
In 2003, Luca Balbiano accepted the chance to restore the vineyard at Villa della Regina, a 16th-century Savoy royal villa set on a hill inside the city limits of Turin. The House of Savoy had planted vines on that slope centuries earlier. By the time Luca came to it, the vineyard had been abandoned for decades. He replanted it with Freisa, vinified the fruit under the Freisa di Chieri DOC, and released the wine under the name Vigna Villa della Regina. Under Italian wine law, a DOC wine must be grown within a defined geographical zone. This one qualified, and it did so from a hillside encircled by one of northern Italy's largest cities. No other Italian producer holds a DOC designation for a vineyard inside a city. The label says Vigna Villa della Regina. The hill is still there, between the royal villa and the Turin skyline.
Final Word
Balbiano Melchiorre makes a sustained case for Freisa di Chieri as a serious grape for dry red wine. Three generations have chosen it when the market did not demand it, and the estate produces Freisa, Barbera, Bonarda, and Malvasia from estate vineyards. The Villa della Regina vineyard is the detail that stays: a DOC wine grown inside a major Italian city, revived from an aristocratic hillside that most people drive past without knowing it is there.
