The producer
Piero Gatti founded this seven-hectare estate on the Moncucco hill in Santo Stefano Belbo in 1988, farming its own land in the Lower Langa rather than sourcing fruit. Every parcel across three communes, Santo Stefano Belbo, Cossano Belbo, and Nizza Monferrato, belongs to the estate. Barbara Gatti took over from her mother Rita around 2000 and held to the same logic: one grape, estate-grown, bottled under the Gatti name.
The wine is a Piemonte DOC Moscato made entirely from Moscato Bianco grown on south-facing slopes. Vines planted between 1955 and 1995 give the aromatics depth and concentration. Fermentation is arrested while residual sugar sits at around 140 grams per litre, alcohol at 5.5%, and the natural light carbonation stays in the bottle. The wine is a frizzante Moscato: straw-yellow, fragrant with honeysuckle, orange blossom, and ripe peach, lightly fizzing across the palate, and clean on the finish. Drink it cold and young.

The Producer
On the Moncucco hill in Santo Stefano Belbo, in the Lower Langa zone of Piemonte, Piero Gatti founded an estate in 1988 with a single aromatic grape and no ambition to buy in fruit. Every parcel belonged to the estate. Every bottle came from its own land.
The estate now runs under Barbara Gatti, who took over from her mother Rita around 2000. The handover changed the face of the estate without altering its logic: Moscato Bianco grown on south-facing hillside parcels, harvested on the vine's own schedule, and bottled as a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet white. Seven hectares spread across three communes, Santo Stefano Belbo, Cossano Belbo, and Nizza Monferrato, and all of them under estate control.
Gatti is not a large house and does not operate like one. The range is narrow on purpose. The argument is about one grape in one place and what that grape can do when it is farmed, not sourced.
Place
The Lower Langa is the strip of Piemonte hill country that runs south of the Tanaro river, below the more famous Barolo and Barbaresco zones. Santo Stefano Belbo sits near its eastern edge, close to where the Belbo river valley opens toward the Monferrato hills. The land here has grown Moscato Bianco for generations, and the appellation Moscato d'Asti DOCG, which sits immediately above Piemonte DOC Moscato in the hierarchy, was built around this zone.
Gatti's vineyards face south across three communes. South aspect in this part of Piemonte means reliable sun accumulation on the slopes, earlier ripening than north or east-facing parcels, and a concentration of Moscato Bianco's aromatic compounds. That ripening pattern matters for the label: Gatti bottles under Piemonte DOC rather than Moscato d'Asti DOCG, which requires compliance with a fixed harvest window. The DOC classification gives the estate the flexibility to harvest when the vine is ready rather than when the regulations permit.
The consequence in the glass is a Moscato picked at natural aromatic peak, not picked to a calendar.
Soil And Site
The Moncucco hill in Santo Stefano Belbo sits in the calcareous marl and clay territory typical of the Lower Langa. These soils hold water well enough to carry vines through summer heat while draining freely enough to avoid waterlogging on the slopes. South-facing hillside parcels in this terrain give Moscato Bianco the warmth to develop its characteristic stone fruit and floral oils without the grape losing its natural acidity.
Vines on the estate were planted between 1955 and 1995, giving a range from mature old-vine stock to more recent plantings. The spread across forty years of planting dates means the estate draws from parcels at different stages of vine development across its three communes.
Story
Piero Gatti came from a farming background in the Lower Langa. The tradition was old: this part of Piemonte had grown Moscato Bianco for table, for sale, and eventually for the sparkling wines that made the zone commercially significant. When Gatti founded the estate in 1988, he chose to farm the estate's own land and bottle under its own name, rather than sell grapes to a cooperative or négociant.
The estate grew around one grape and held to it. In the 1990s, Gatti chose to bottle under Piemonte DOC rather than Moscato d'Asti DOCG. The decision appears connected to the south-facing vineyard's ripening schedule, which did not align comfortably with the DOCG harvest window. Harvesting on the vine's terms rather than the appellation's terms meant accepting a less prominent label. The wine on the label changed; the approach to the vineyard did not.
Around 2000, Barbara Gatti took over leadership from her mother Rita. She inherited both the parcels and the discipline of farming them without outside fruit.
Vineyards And Cellar
All seven hectares are estate-farmed. South-facing orientation across the Moncucco hill and the two flanking commune sites accelerates ripening and concentrates Moscato Bianco's aromatic expression. Vine age ranges from parcels planted in 1955 to those planted in 1995, and the age spread contributes depth to the aromatic profile rather than uniformity.
The cellar work for the Piemonte DOC Moscato follows the method standard for frizzante sweet whites in this zone: fermentation is arrested while residual sugar remains high, approximately 140 grams per litre, and the wine retains its natural light carbonation. Alcohol stops at around 5.5%, which is low by any measure and keeps the wine's sweetness from feeling heavy. The Moscato is bottled as a vegan-certified wine.
Wines
Gatti's primary wine is the Piemonte DOC Moscato, made from 100% Moscato Bianco grown across the estate's three communes. It is a frizzante sweet white at 5.5% alcohol with 140 grams per litre of residual sugar. The light sparkle is a product of arrested fermentation, not secondary carbonation, and it reads across the palate as gentle fizz rather than full effervescence.
The range centres on the Piemonte DOC Moscato. The Piemonte DOC Moscato is the estate's defining work and the wine that carries its argument.
In The Glass
The Piemonte DOC Moscato pours a clear straw-yellow, bright against the light. On the nose, the aromatics are immediate and pronounced: honeysuckle and orange blossom arrive first, then ripe nectarine and melon, with apple and peach layering in alongside a faint yeasty note. The aromatic oils in Moscato Bianco are concentrated by the south-facing ripening and released fully at 5.5% alcohol, where nothing masks them.
In the mouth, the frizzante prickle opens across the palate before the sweetness registers. The residual sugar is present at 140 grams per litre but the light carbonation and the grape's natural acidity keep the wine feeling fresh rather than dense. It is sweet but not syrupy: the fruit moves through the mid-palate and finishes cleanly, with no heavy aftertaste. The alcohol is low enough that the wine sits light on the tongue through the finish.
Drink cold and young. The wine is built for immediate pleasure, not development.
A Bottle To Understand It
The Piemonte DOC Moscato is the only bottle to start with. It is a frizzante sweet white made from 100% Moscato Bianco grown on south-facing parcels on the Moncucco hill, harvested to the vine's natural schedule and bottled at 5.5% alcohol with 140 grams per litre of residual sugar. In the glass it is fragrant, peachy, and lightly fizzing, sweet enough to register clearly but fresh enough to drink through a warm afternoon without fatigue. The low alcohol and the natural carbonation are not compromises: they are what this grape, in this place, produces when it is left to ripen fully and bottled honestly. Open it cold. Drink it the same day.
Anecdote
At some point in the 1990s, the Moncucco hill's south-facing slopes were producing Moscato Bianco at full ripeness earlier than the DOCG Moscato d'Asti harvest window allowed. The DOCG calendar is fixed. Gatti's vines were not. The estate faced a choice: harvest within the classification's permitted window and accept fruit that had not reached its natural aromatic peak, or harvest when the vine said it was ready and give up the DOCG label in exchange. Gatti chose the second option. The wine went to market as Piemonte DOC Moscato, a less recognized appellation, while the grapes came in at the moment the south-facing slopes had been building toward.
Final Word
Azienda Agricola Piero Gatti is a seven-hectare estate with one grape, one argument, and a clear record of following that argument wherever it leads, including away from a more prestigious classification. The Piemonte DOC Moscato is a small, honest wine made from old south-facing parcels in a part of Piemonte that has grown Moscato Bianco longer than most of its producers have been named. It is worth knowing for what it is: aromatic, lightly fizzing, low in alcohol, and built entirely from estate land. Not more than that, and nothing less.
